also depends on your budget: if you can afford Juicy 7s' date=' try looking at Avid Code. But Juicy 5s will do just fine. Awesome set of brakes.

Avid Codes no doubt Big%20smile

...keeping in mind NEWBY0007, that I do downhill.. So Codes are sheer strength and power.. Maybe not the lightest or what-not and are rather pricey

I have both

New 2008 XT by far!!!!

Had so much troubles with 2 sets of 5`s.... Maybe 7`s are better but I would only take the ultimates over the XT else XT wins hands down

I have never had anything on the Avid range better than Juicy 3's. They got on my nerves with constant rubbing against the disc. Would always have to calibrate and niggle with. Comparing Apples with Apples, my wife's Deore's were better calibration wise than the Juicy 3's.

I now have XT's, not a single issue to date. light, comfortable, responsive and cool looking.

Besides the Juicy's calibration issues they were good.

So in summary go XT's!

I had Jucy 3 and stripped the tiny screw thet sets the lever distance during 2007 Sabie Exp (about a month after buying them). Had to do a boer-maak-'n-plan and then avid recons that voids the warranty and did not want to replace them. Replaced them with a set of XT and never looked back. Super easy to change pads and don't have to fiddle with them constantly like the maguras on my Tandem. When it is time I will replace the tandems brakes with XT as well.

But then why is there always such a hype for Juicy's 5 + 7 ?

dont mean to be snide, but if you believe the hype about XTs, then you've answered your own question.

Some swear by Avid, others by SRAM. here, the balance would appear to be with XT, but are the comments statistically relevant?

My experiences are rather 1-sided, as i've only ever had Juicy 5s, and havent had any of the issues anyone here has mentioned.

I've changed the pads myself, and it's a non-issue. Warbling turkey noises under braking? nope. not that either.

Fading under prolonged braking? errm not really if only cos I dont white knuckle my brakes smiley2.gif In fact, i find what some call a softness in the Juicy brakes, very useful in terms of modulation. Does it still bite when i need it to? definitely. ?So they do work.

However, it's again a case of blondes vs brunettes. Both are women, both have boobs. But we each have our particular preferences. Me, i prefer my blondes, and Juicy ones at that smiley17.gif

Ok so no one is better than the other.....

Looks like I will have to use my own opinion here..

My XT'S work great - hauling my 98kg to a stop down hills etc..

I am looking to replace my wifes brakes - and want her to have great braking too, currently her mech disc brakes fade - and struggle to pull her minute 47Kg to a stop...

I will rethink the whole thing...

I want simple easy excellent brakes which will work for her..

Looks like Shimano is tops on that score...
