Friends, be warned these goons are still out there. Saturday afternoon a lone rider was the target of two hijackers. They had a good go at him with a panga and took his bike.PLEASE guys and girls don't go it alone between Brackenhurst and Everite, in the velt behind Rand water....and for those trying to start rumours about muggings at Rietvlei it is NOT true. We don't say it will never happen but we are pretty safe and try our best. Come enjoy the 10km green route and blue added on which is more technical.

I dont stay in this area but I run and ride there quite often in summer, but I cant place the area Wendall.?

If I think of the veld behind Rand Water, I think of that little side road off Klipriver?? Is that the one.?

Or the Alwynspoort road which actually also runs behind Rand Water, lots of open fields there, but its a busy road, should be safe??

If I think of Brakenhurst to Everite, I think of the area starting at the petrol station on the corner of Klipriver and the road going down the steps - all the way down past Nampack, over that little intersection and down to Everite? - thats a long way, is it not maybe just the little bit from the fourway stop down to Everite.?

Or am I waaaaaay off the mark here.?

Hope the rider is okay, was he injured.?

I'm not in Gauteng but this still makes me Angry, what if cyclists travel with pepper spray or something, won't that make a difference, or take a Prodder aka: Shocking machine, I see they're coming out really portable and apparently give a good kick.  Or take both pepper spray and a prodder, so you can spray the bl*ksim in the eyes and then shock himFruitloop2009-08-25 00:00:06

Re-reading the post by Wendall, I get the feeling these are "off road" meaning the people were mountainbiking not riding on the

road.

.........But I may be wrong.

If not, the issue is no less severe, but it dos make a differance, the roads that run through these areas are fairly busy and I would be surprised if somebody was hi-jacked on the tar during daylight as there will undoubtably be passing cars who will see whats happening. However, the fields are obscured from view by big trees, and in many cases are "lower" than the roads so impossible for motorists to see whats happening.

I think I have also seen connecting tunnels which run under the road for people to pass from one side of the highway to the other, these tunnels are completely obscured so if you are riding in one, you are at the mercy of anyone inside.

Ewep was hi-jacked on that Rietvlei road in daylight a few years ago. Taxi pulled up next to him and demanded his bike.

Wow, okay, its a very, very busy road (Swartkoppies) - I just finished a contract in Meyersdal so I traveled that road daily for about 4 months - I am surprised.!

Stick to the inside's of Rietvlei and you can ride in safety for hours.

Yea safe from all the crooks, but not safe from yourself, there you try and hijack yourself on the <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />

And and and Wend's just refuses to make that wet rooty corner safe (for me that is, apparently others ride it) Wink - I did see some bits of concrete slabs there now but it still doesn't help me .... thanks for trying Wendell!

I would love to see someone do the route without stopping, stumbling, unclipping or falling their ass off. Ouch<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Hi Porky, you have the right area. They focus on MTB riders but have taken a single road back at the bottom of the steps by the ex railway line. Thermanator, the more you ride the easier it gets. Please have fun.
