Do those of you that have powermeters use them for racing as well as training?

Do you have the meter on a spare bike if not?

The drawback on use is only weight and you need a racing wheelset with power if you have PT.

But the benefit is being able to retrospectively analyze your race...

what do you do?

I know of plenty of guys racing with there PowerTaps. I don't but I think I might for Spring Season, I mean, what is a extra 200g on a wheel? Nothing really, just add 200ml less energy drink;-P

I have been using both the road and MTB PT in races for a while now.

On the road its a bit of a no brainer as the difference is so small. The MTB hub is close to 400g heavier so I don't use it for XC races where the data is less useful anyway. For MTB marathon races it is a very good pacing tool.

Jo (CL team) and I were discussing the same thing. They are leaving for a UCI 2.2 Tour in France and she'll be using her 32 spoked PT wheel (2 ladies are lucky enough to get 202 PT's).

The bikes are light enough not to worry about the extra weight - but she would rather race with her 303's cos of the aero advantages.

I used my PT wheel during the Lost City and will continue to use it for the 'samller' races.

It's awesome to check the stats after your race!

How long is this powermetre thing? Sorri could not resist and will fetch said coat on the way out...

One of the disads of the PM thingy is it's specificness, i.e. if you got multiple road bikeS and mtbkS it gets a touch expensive / compliacted.

Never mind if you also swim and run...

Where's my coat

EDIT: Oops actualy what I wanted to say before I got carried away...IMO you should race with it as it would be ideal tool to prevent overextending yourself in a race i.e as JW said pacing purposes

I have got used the extra data now and am a numbers freak... so I'd be bummed without it.

As a pacing tool I reckon is the main reason to have one racing - that goes to say you have the liberty of pacing oneself!! Something I do not.

@ marius on track it would be lekker - problem is the Polar only reads in 5sec chunks so the peak power numbers look very mediocre... peak for instance at last wednesdays killarney sprint only showed up as 750W

But that was held for over 5 sec so who knows what the instant torque was.

They all have their quirks:

SRM - Can only use on one bike but use many wheelsets

Powertap - Can use only the wheels youhave power hubs for but could have a few bikes as the headunits are less expensive.

Polar, can use and crank and any bike, and any wheels. not quick to swap tho!

NO chance in hell its to heavy for my liking even if it is just 200g-400g. I use diet water to save weight.

You could save the weight elsewhere is you really had to...

You would still have the extra 400g. Also all your numbers should be good for training and then all you need is how far you gotta go in a race as technology!

So the rumor he donated his left nut is true smiley36.gif - A die hard LA fan!

Correct and I have increased my cadence and I have the heart the size of a mooses.

it's not a extra 400g, nomal hub weight is about 200-250g on the back wheel and the SL Hub is what, 400-450g?? so it's just 200g, it's the weight of two standard tubes. But I understand, I've always tried to save weight on the bike no matter how little it might seem to others, it gives you a mental edge I guess.

Hey each to their own. Some dope, some save weight. So each to their own when it comes to racing.
