Ok so you have washed the bike, cleaned the chain done all the cleaning with all the solvents under the sun, then you put the bike together ... apart from the chain - what are you meant to lube/grease/oil ?

An Overlord suggested silicone spray between the pivots .... ? What is the long term impact of this if you dont do it again ?

I only lube my chain most washes. The more you lube the more crap sticks to your bike. I dont see what advantage silicone spraying your pivots will do.

When you do a minor service on your bike you can do derailleur pivots, cables, seatpost and then the heads of the allen key bolts. Major services do bearings and anything else.

Keep it simple.

well this felt like a major service .. took me over a week to get everything clean.

do you use lube on the heads or a touch of bath sealant as suggested in a recent bike mag.

and, what do you use on the seatpost ?

Did you strip the bike?

Have a look on the net for different ways of cleaning your bike. I just have an assortment of brushes and a bucket. First time I did it it took forever but then you get better at it and it becomes a 15 minute exercise. You are more likely to clean it after a ride if you can do this. Wait for the mud to go hard and then its a real pain in the arse.

I cannot see the point of using bath sealant on my headset and wont be doing so. Do not understand that.

I use a very small amount of grease on my seatpost. Just enough to prevent any squeeks. Do this after about every 5th wash when i take my tube out to drain any water that might have gone down the tube.

This will probably degenerate into one of those bike washing/lubing posts that can compare to religious debates. What works best for you is best for you.

so you use a touch of lube on your FD and RD pivots, maybe a bit on the springs as I cleaned these too.

Possibly a touch of lube on the seatpost.

But no lube or silicone spray around the suspension pivots ?

Road the bike last night up and down the road and it has developed a bit of a nasty squeak again

Use the bloody Silicone spray on the pivots!! Nothing will happen to them. If someone can give me scientific proof that it does something to the pivots or so I will stop using it myself.

There is an easy solution to this pivot-point debate. Harden the f@#$ up and ride a hardtail.

if i wanted to make like an australian I would have gone to jail island
