15.4% VAT and no duties on bike parts' date=' only on complete bikes and clothing...[/quote']

not sure where you get 15.4% from, but my experience to date has been 14% VAT on your purchase price (if the exchange drops by the time it arrives in SA, too bad for you) and then there is a R25 clearance fee.

On clothing purchased, it has been the same luckily - no extra duties there (perhaps someone isn't doing there job properly).

havent ordered a complete bike, but that may have an extra duty on it.

VAT is at 14%, but when the VAT is calculated there is a 10% upliftment on the item. For example, if the value is R100.00, VAT will be charged on R100 plus 10%, R110.00.

A R100 item will cost:

Item                                R100

VAT (R100 x 1.1 x 14%)   R15.40

                                       R115.40

There are no duties on cycling equipment

VAT is 14% on 110% of the purchase price for imports, which is the same as 15.4%... could try and get them to break the bike down, but if they decide to be difficult, be prepared to pay the duties...

Got this from a post on Chit Chat forum:

Vat is calculated at
Cost of goods + 10% =R ? x14% = Vat
Eg
R1000 + 10% =R1100 x14% = R154.00

So, 15.4% would be correct.

no duties on bike parts? so i wounder if they will take a total bike apart and throw it in a box for you? where do you pay the VAT? at the post office

The short answer is yes, if you ask nicely they will, and label it as parts. They even mark clothing as bike parts if there is a part involved too. Just that many of their  brands are quite rare in these parts so remember should anything F@#k out you're on your own, its not fair to expect our local bike shops and wholesalers to help you out with issues should they arise.

Be carefull if you are ordering clothing and shoes me and my buddy just ordered 6 pairs of shoes and other stuff and we got hit with 25% import duty and a customs duty. If you have a mate in the UK get the stuff sent to him and then get your mate to send it as a gift.

Actually CRC do have a returns policy in place, should they mess up an order or there is a problem with a part. Having made use of it to return a faulty order, they were prompt in sorting it out and sending me back the correct item.

As with most things if your LBS gives crap service you are on your own too.
