Hi guys

I have a pair of Mavic X819 rims, and managed to land so hard on a rock that I literally ripped 6 of the nipples out of the rim. It seems that some of the nipples snapped, leaving their thread inside the rim. Others might actually have stripped the thread of the rim.

Any advice / ideas? I suppose one could get the broken nipple-threads out of the rim with a reverse-thread thingie... But if the actual threads in the rim are stripped, I suppose the thing is farkt! Ai - awesome timing.

I'm a bit worried, because I'm racing Karoo to Coast on Sunday, and have to leave here tomorrow evening!!! smiley19.gif

Let the ideas flow...

You'll have to be more precise: There is a nipple and a nipple holder screw insert thingy involved here. The rims are drilled and treaded form one side only, so when the wheel is being built you place the nipple in the screw insert jobby and screw the insert into the rim.

So what ripped out, the nipple from the insert jobby or the whole assembly from the rim? Either way it sounds just about FUBR. Ermm

I wonder if even JB is up for this one. Recently I had an 819 develop fatigue cracks all along the inside of the rim. Not the best rims, but one of the few tubeless rims out there.

Mental note: Avoid rock on landings with my brand new x819.

Not too many options available. CWC may be your best bet.

You will be lucky to find a wheel builder with all the spokes and nipples (2.0x16mm) in stock AND able to build the wheel for you tomorrrow.

I was also wondering what JB has to say about this... He seems to have infinite knowledge of everything. Be interesting what he thinks. Have the wheel at my LBS currently, and they're trying to get the broken things out of the rim's threads. Looks as though they might be getting somewhere. Really hope they get it right.

Suppose the worst would be if the threads in the rim are actually stripped. That would imply that it's pretty much useless.

If you can take a picture that might answer a couple of questions and give a better idea of how big the problem is.

You'd still need to get somebody to build/rebuild or lend/sell/supply you  a new wheel if you're leaving for Karoo to Coast tomorrow

If this ends up being the case I suggest the following:

1. Send it down to the garden route, Knysna area.

2. Get it to a hippy commune.

3. Get them to  make a nice 26" dream catcher out of it.

That's the closest you'll get to riding it again, in your dreams.  Ouch

Unfortunately I can't take pics right now - bike is at my LBS. If they don't come right, I will post some pics.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to borrow a wheel from someone if things don't work out, so I should be ok for Karoo to Coast.
