have you tried charging it ?

Mastercard or Visa.

The 305 is cr@p. I was worried about wasting money on a 705

to get rid of my 305, but the 705 has been a fantastic unit.

If you can avoid it, don't get a 305. Either go for another product

or spend a little more and get a 705.

Totaly agree, when i took my 305 unit in last month due to switch off problems garmins reaction was they were not aware the problem was widespread and acted like mine was the first,  total BS imo. If its a design fault they should fix/replace at their cost.

Avnic actually make me laugh ... a response from avnic quoted from the garmap forum regarding a known sensor issue - (again i have loads of websites and complaints to back this up)

"Definitely not common , I would suggest that we have a look at the actual unit & also suggest to try a firmware upgrade."

is this their automated response to any issue or what?Tankman2009-10-05 03:20:56

I have had the 305 for about 14 months and never had any problems. But if I had the problems Tankman had, I would feel the same.

But I am still thinking for a 705 upgrade for Christmas.

I had the same issues with the Edge 305. It was first repaired under warranty and then it became terminal when outside of warranty. Only a month though. Avnic offered to warranty it no cost. I asked about an upgrade as the problem seems to be a design fault with the 305. they did not confirm a design fault but did offer an excellent upgrade price on a Edge 705 cycling bundle.

this support was far better than anything I received from Polar, ever.

I think the problem is with the local agent, i.e. Avnic and how they are addressing the problems with the 305.

Fortunately neither of the two units we use have presented any problems in 2+ years of use.

Our units are "grey" imports; After receiving poor service from Avnic in 2004 when I had problems (also a known issue acknowledged by Garmin international) with my first Garmin GPS, none of my Garmin purchases have gone via Avnic. I don't own any of their (Garmap) maps either.

Strange, I have 15 Garmin products,(each company bakkie has a Nuvi 300)but I personally have four Garmins including the 305 which I use almost daily without issue.

Avnic has been superb in after sales service, replacing units, repairing units and upgrading maps at no cost, last year my oldest unit (Quest) (at least 6 years old) lost its LCD screen, I dropped it off at Avnic to see if it could be repaired, the guy said he was doubtfull, but will look, come back tomorrow.

When I arrived the next day he said, when they tried to fix the unit it broke, sorry Sir, nothing we can do.!

I was just gathering my thoughts, when he smiled, reached under the table and gave me a brand new Quest, - our compliments Sir.

From my experience Avnic have passed every test with flying colours, from what I read there seems there is a massive varience in percieved service levels, - can customer attitude be to blame.?

I can not see that they would discriminate against who they are going to help or not due to friendliness!

I have always been friendly to the staff (your are welcome to read all the emails between avinc and myself)

I have been a fan, promoter, supporter and loyal client to garmin for the last 3 years until sunday. But enough is enough. I have never had a problem with any of the other garmin units I use, touch wood!

The issue is the fact that the 305 was badly designed. I understand that it was not Avinc who designed this unit.

Shouldn't Garmin recall the units and do a upgrade for anyone experiencing these problems?

They might as well make it a habit and send me a new unit once a year, for life!

If your 305 unit is less than a year old you should not be experiencing the switch off problems due to a hardware upgrade on the newer models.

How many times do I need to sit without a unit, loose data, be inconvenienced and just get flippen frustrated.

Avnic should not have even tried to fix my second unit, the one where they did all the test and the same thing happened a coulple of minutes into the ride.

They should have replaced the unit when I walked into the door, done. But no, send me back a still broken unit the day before last years double century, and expect me not to get flipped off when the thing is not fixed?

I keep asking the question, if the product is so great, why is there so many of us that needs to keep going back to have it fixed/replaced. How many times have you had your watch, car, washing machine, fridge, etc replaced?

4 times in 3 years is ridiculous, especially when it is over the same problem!

SlowBee,I prefer the 705.

firstly it sitsnicely on the bars.

The display presents as much information as you require where as the polar requires you to push buttons (which fall off..) to scroll through the cycling data.

The 705 can also be used for navigating while driving since you can load street maps onto it via the SDmicro card.

Much more versatile than Polar. In fact I use it for running as well. I have rigged up a bracket to a velcrostrap from an old ipod to fit it on my arm.

Can also fit it too my kayak (inside) so I can get data on howlong a rivertrip has been.

With the polar you have to buy extra modules, No thanks.

Fair enough!. I hear you.

........But I am still not clear, did the unit fail within the warranty period? If it did, was it replaced or repaired and then failed again OUTSIDE the warranty period?

I ask because a warranty dos not extend with the replaced / repaired unit (ie) its a years warranty, after 11 months the unit fails and is replaced, it dos not mean that now you have ANOTHER 12 months warranty, the initial warranty still remains in force and in effect you only have 1 month left on the new unit.

Many folk misunderstand this.

If the unit is outside warranty, AVNIC is not obliged to replace it, even if there is a known fault, the warranty is one year from date of initial purchase, this is irrespective of known faults etc.

If the unit is still within the initial year warranty, I think you have a legitimate gripe, if its not, well..............!

Now, I hear you that in the USA they change out the units, well, there could be lots of reasons why a manufacturer would make a SEPERATE replacement policy for one country only, but, one must remember it may not be an international agreement and the SA importer may not have access to that swop out programme.

Porky i have had very good service as well from Avnic , but the point remains that Avnic is aware of a problem on older Garmin 305's but claim not to as this would result in a huge cost to them for repair/replacement costs.

Well if the guarantee works the way you explained it, only the first one was still under guarantee.

But why would a replacement unit not receive a new 1 year guarantee, it is brand new? Exactly the same as if I would have went and bought it new in a shop?

Again, not the guarantee that is the issue here, the product is! It is not the guarantee causing the unit to switch off.Tankman2009-10-06 05:31:20

I've had no problems with either my 305 or my 705.

Agree with lefty's recommendation of the 705. The 705 also integrates very well with Powertap hubs, so you get all the data you could possibly want!
