Cyclists riding badly.

Hopefully the "coach" or mentor of this group of cyclists can read this or at least be made aware that this group of cyclists haven't a friggin clue on how to ride safely.

I use the inverted comma's around the words "development" because the riders in question were black and maybe coloured youngsters ranging (I think ) in age from 10-16 years . A group of 10-15 riders. They were kitted out on black cycling shorts and white tops with a green stripe running from the neck downwards and Pick 'n Pay is clearly visable on the tops.

They were riding 3/4 abreast up the Irene / Steynsrust Rd (above the R102) towards the Somerset College area at about 16h15 yesterday ,heading towards Abelia Street /R44.

What these kids were doing, was taking up the entire lane going up hill (the road is steep and a solid white line) and causing a back up of frustrated motorists behind them. They were oblivious to the cars and forced the motorists to overtake them across the white lines. Lots of fist shaking and swearing entailed.

I just feel that the coach should be aware and mentoring the group on safety and road etiquette.

PS

I wasn't in a car at the time, I was on the opposite side of the road running up that friggin' mother of a hill. smiley36.gif headhunter2009-10-23 02:00:51

head hunter - om me your details please.

These guys are also ride along the R44, they also use the Kuils River Road.

I have stopped all of them before and asked to speak to the team captain and told them to ride correctly.

On a different occasion I spoke to two adults riding with them.

Next time I will take their numbers on the bikes (they have little white stickers) and then report them from there. They used to ride in pick n' pay kit. Now they ride in a combination of mtn kit and acsis kit.

But I have alot of respect for these guys. They ride 50 - 60 km a day in takkies and often on bikes that are two small, or two big - but heck they get out there and ride - they just need someone to help and guide them.

thanks.

I have spoken to Skye before as I think she knows who these guys are. I will contact you once I know more info.

If you can try and keep a log of when and where you see these guys. But I dont want to be negative in talking to them - I really want to help them.

I drive past these guys almost every day coming from work in somerset going to home in stellies.

They ride crazy. One time saw one of them nearly getting hit by a car up the Lord Charles hill on the R44. They ride in a bunch the full yellow line area - which is quite big going up there - and still some of them jump the bunch sprinting around the group into the traffic lane - people drive up there at 80km/h. The car had to swing into the faster lane otherwise he would have hit the guy.

You guys know how unstable these guys ride - elite and every other group. The idea seams good but hell - they ride like a bunch of idiots. As if its not their problem if they get hit by a car.

For those who like to "report" incidents - all of these riders wore helmets Wink so at least the are legal hahaha

?

It's not...

Agreed. But a good chance they are dead and wont be there to settle in court with the driver. Then what smart@ss?

These guys need help and mentoring, otherwise a few mommies will be crying over yet another cycling statistic. Only a matter of time IMHO.

we should never put down enthusiasm, and these riders have loads of it. You can see they love the sport.

There are enough of us who see these guys. Lets try and find out if they are part of a club, who they work train under etc as they are always in a bunch.

Here is a fantastic chance to help others out to become better riders. So between us lets get together and make a difference !!!

I wunder where is the ever so righteous mr Burp Windbreaker to insist it is their right to ride on public roads???????....... and questioning the experience of the writer on his ability to guage whether they are "behaving badly" or not.

Big H,

I found your comment rather amusing, considering you posted a photo recently of a Jhb Team "behaving Badly" and wonder where you got to ability to gauge this as well?... In my opinion. who are any of us to gauge?. I just pray all cyclists remain safe.......

The group in question in this topic are really keen cyclists, have been given all the talks and rules, as I have done that personally. They just don't think they are in danger, as they are having fun. A nightmare of note, but they are so keen.  Useful advise and a way for it to 'sink' in is what they need.  We have had them at training for Eric van enter, and they behave extremely well whilst under a watchful eye.

Great to see some hubbers keen to help out.

Someone please help them with some basic bike maintenance as well please, they rode past my house going up the hill slowly and their chains sounded like a bunch of canaries on speed. (not AT speed....)

Won't harp on about their fashion of riding....it's been discussed on numerous threads, I see them regularly and I have noticed no improvement over time.

Its a shame, for all the amount of assistance they receive, or have received, makes one wonder when they will learn.... I know that I have given up trying....

Embarrassed

It is a pity, coz there is so much help out there for them.

Hopefully they ride safe when necessary.
