Also a bit unfortunate that the article re. VG's in Bicycling Mag' date=' stated that riding was free, at the same time they decided to charge the R25.00. [/quote']The guys from Tread must've been there for that article quite a while ago or they got it wrong, because when that article came out, they'd been charging for a while already. if my memory serves me right, they were charging since  a while before the Nando Magalies Adventure.

Red Devil mentions Bicycling, not Tread. The Tread Mag absolutely does mention the R25.00 fee.

Bicycling also does list the fee I'm sure. Although I could be wrong.

You are right though, the entrance fee has been around for a few months as well as the signage.

I'm such a chop! EmbarrassedYou're 100% right Dassie,    it WAS Bicycling (I even mentioned it to Linda at Van Gaalens after in came out) what i meant to add was that there's also a write up in Tread! (wrote that reply in a bit of a hurry with a million things in my head..oopsEmbarrassed)

SPTLSB1 - Before making cocky comments like that first get context to this situation.

I'm not bragging about the hours I did. I've got more serious hours to brag about if I wanted to. Why I meant the hours was to state the fact that we were going to spend that money in any case at his establishment as we were hungry.

I'm very happy to pay the money' date=' I agree it is some of the best single track in Gauteng. I'll go back despite this.

We were just unhappy about his approach towards us.

The reason for the mail was to inform everyone that charging now applies and that it is a black and white rule. You ride you pay.

Oh! And SPTLSB1! R85 takes you quite far if you stop twice. But it becomes significantly small when you need to pay a further R25.

[/quote']

Then brag about it, because that's perhaps how you can boost your ego amongst people.. most probably what you want.

At the end, not to worried what you are trying to state about how hungry you were or even how long you have ridden, or even how much money you had.

You mention the reason for the post was to inform of new charges to access Van Gaalens, however, if you read your thread it is about, shame, you almost didn't have any money for a sandwich and have ridden sooo long.

Anyways, can see your ego is small if you have to justify your comments and perhaps need a boost.

Cry i agree it is a great ride, BUT, and a BIG BUT, last weekend we did a round trip of 100km, finishing at Van Gaalen's, had friends and family come around, we road in on the top side and ended up at the resturant, all good up to this stage, the owner come out and said that we need to pay! I think that was the wrong approach, he should have offer if we were going to eat then dont swet about the the charge, we end up spending R500 - 600 for the meal! so i ask the question are they in it for the money or to get MTB rides to eat, they make the amoney on the food not the ride, if you dont eat then yes charge. Come on!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Fatboy, what'd you think goes into making and maintaining those trails?

you reckon he spent a casual Saturday afternoon when he was bored making them!

You ride you pay.

You eat you pay.

You ride and eat, you still pay for riding!

Unless there was arrogance involved (which I very much doubt) when he asked you for it , i think you need to "Come on"!

Ja..... all we do is *** en Betaal - MTB rides are becoming expensive, take the Cradle Quest, nice ride but, no medels, no daily finish sheet, i know it was advertised cheap and nasty, but for a local ride!!!!!! OH guess who was the organize's???????

Hey SPTLSB1, relax bru - not all of us that ride to VG know of the fee - I would have been surprised - dont know where your attitude comes from but it has this rather unpleasant dog dung smell.  I don't but any of the cycling mags anymore - complete waste of good money.  Borriz - thanks for the heads-up, appreciate it.

Hi

The R25 charge has been in place for a couple of months now. My feeling is that we (the mountain biking community) really need to support this initiative as the trails that exist and the new ones that are being added are some of the best riding available. It you have not ridden the river trail then make a date to get the best value for R25 that you can hope for.

The new "concrete strip" trail to the south is also superb. The more support we give the more the trails will improve. Sound good to me.

Enjoy!

Once again! I'll go back any day. I'll pay even R50 for that track.

As I don't read any SA bicycling mags, other than Tread, we were not informed.

This thread was to inform.
