please advise.

the chain will jump in front on the big chainring

only in the top 3 rear sprokets.

it use to be fine now it jumps.

Could be one of 3 things -

 

 

 

1. Adjustment - tweak your barrel adjuster, and if it doesn't go away check

 

 

 

2. Alignment - is your derailleur hanger straight? if yes, then

 

 

 

3. Chain is worn. Replace chain and cassette.

 

 

 

Or, search "chain skipping", and enjoy about 6 hours of riveting reading...

Are you talking about the 3 biggest sprockets at the back? If so you should rather change down to your smaller chain ring in the front.

As you say, it's possible to write a whole book on troublesome gears.

 

 

 

I'd like to suggest another two possible problems:

 

 

 

4. Loose cassette/freewheel body

 

5. Worn cable housing or cable housing ends (a more common problem than many people realise, especially where the cable housing enters the derailleur).

Agree, it shouldn't be jumping, just saying, you shouldn't be riding in your big chainring and biggest gears at the back.

Another possibility is your big chainring could be warn, not common though as it takes a long time and lots of wear for this to happen.

Good calls, both of those, the loose freehub body's not likely if it's only happening in some gears. (Are these by any chance 'favourite gears'? If so, it's definitely the chain and cassette)

 

 

 

Also, if it's a full sus, check your cable routing - it can also cause issues.

If the big blade was causing the issue, he'd hump his stem every time he got out of the saddle - and it would be visibly worn (read w@nkered). You'd go through quite a few chains and cassettes before a blade started causing trouble.

thats a bit of an old wives tale, ride big/small if you want, just dont do hars things like sprinting while in these gears.

 

 

 

the equipment was well stress tested before we advanced through time from 1 gear to 11

There was a thread on it a while beck if you want all the details, but basically the compression stroke can pull on the cable housings if they're too short, which will cause ghost shifting. Quite annoying, my bike did it for a while.
