My wife and I both ride Fox float 120mm shocks and we both ride about 100 to 120 km a week.

My LBS suggests that we service the shock every 3 months but this entails sending it off and being without our bikes for a while.

I want to keep the shock in good nick but also don't want unnecessary expense and time spent on them.

What do you guys think? How often should a Fox shock be sent off for service if there are no obvious problems with it.

Thanks

Ray

Usually its every 50hrs of riding

shock or fork?

Front shock. The one on the fork. But I would like to know about the back one too for that matter.

Thanks. Wow, thats a lot of down time. Every six weeks or so. That would cost me around R 5000 (including postage to JHB and insurance) a year. Almost worth letting the thing wear down (only changing seals when they go) and buying a new one every two years.

well according to the fox racing shock tech center the following helps to maintain the float:

Every ride: clean exterior of fork with mild soap and water

After 15hrs riding time: clean and inspect dust wipers

After 50hrs riding time: service fork; where they inspect dropout thickness, inspect bushings, change the oil, change the Float fluid in the air chambers etc.

So its really a question of how often you ride and for how long, that determines the frequency of services. Bear in mind that it's wise not to leave a new fork for too long before servicing, the guys in the assembly factory can sometimes skimp on stuff!

The best is to keep it clean, don't forget to turn the lockout "off" after climbing and before descending and have it set to your weight and usage.

I learnt to service both front and rear shox on the fox tech site ca't remember what the adress is but sure you can find it if you try.

These forks and shox are simple to change oils and seals. But when dampers give hassles you will need to send it in.

Order the seals and oils from your LBS and If they wont help you,I will.

You simply HAVE to attend Johan Bormann shock service workshop...finish en klaar..

You'll be empowered for the rest of your life and save thousands of bucks...

AND your shock will last much londer when you yourself take ownership of its service intervals....

Alternatively - go to one of JB's workshops' date=' and learn how to do it yourself! Tongue[/quote']

I would love that, going to make time for it someday.

Unfortunately, well fortunately actually, I live on a farm in Tzaneen and time and distance are ever an issue. It's spray season, fire season, blah, blah, blah, always something.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will do a bit of net research and learn how to do it myself, that will help with down time and transport costs.
