Suprisingly, in the Schwalbe range, there is very little difference between the folding and UST tyre.

 

the bead is triangular on the UST and rounded in the folding. This allows the UST to be run SAFELY at lower pressures, beause they "hook" into the rim better

 

the only other difference is an extra layer of rubber vulcanised on the inside of the tyre to make it more airtight

 

The carcass design and EPI is the same. The compounds used on the rolling surface are the same

how well do the non-ust ones seat. My concern is not the side wall sealing - sealant takes care of that (and if you don't use sealant then you must use UST) but I am concerned as to how hard it is to seat them in the field if something goes wrong.

If going the Schwalbe route I would go for the Snakeskin setup, If I decided not to use the UST. Slightly better sidewall protection which is necessary when you ride softer pressures.

Having more rubber on the sidewalls as Shamus says keeps the air in and keeps the sharp stuff out better.

Pity its difficult to get hold of the snakeskin option, only saw it at CL once, and then it cost more than my bike... (JK)

 

as for seating the tires, I have always inflated new ones with a bomb and seating has never been a problem. On my XT rims, the beads hold well, never had an issue, and on my mavic rims, the bond that forms between the No Flats strip and the bead has also never let me down, so far...

You have? In the plural nogal?

 

Whatever made those wire bead tyres that you observed climb off, had nothing to do with the fact that the bead was wire or otherwise.

 

I think you're perpretatring scare-mongering.

Why is it sometimes so difficult to fit a tire?


Fitting difficulties often arise when the diameters of the rim and the tire do not match perfectly.


Rims may have a tolerance in diameter of +/- 0' date='5 mm. In addition, the height of the rim flank also may have a tolerance of +/- 0,5 mm. This adds up to a complete tolerance of +/- 1,55 in the outside diameter, or of +/- 4,7 mm in the outer circumference. Something that is not obvious to the casual observer is that rims are compressed during wheelbuilding. The before build diameter and after build diameter can differ by as much as 3mm.

 

If you've ever asked someone to take a "hop" out of a wheel, you've inadvertertly asked them to make the wheel smaller in one particular spot.

 

I find that wheels with chronic tyre fit problems can be improved by a bit more tension in the spokes.

We have used :

wire bead single compound

folding single compound

folding dual compound, and

folding triple compound (Evolution)

all with pleasing results.

 

It apears that the most important factor when using non-UST tyres is the fit against the rim. Both tyre and rim must conform accurately to ETRTO

A well built rim will fit and seal (seat) with a well manufactured tyre.

folding tyres on tubeless rims work well

as my Race wheels, I run folding Racing Ralphs on my tubeless Crank Brothers Cobalt wheels.

 

as my training/ demo/test wheels, I have 3 sets of Mavic Crossland UST rims paired with folding Nobby Nics, Smart Sams and Little Alberts.

These tyres have all worked well for over a year

The reason i asked is to see if theres any majour difference when it comes to seating and sidewalls.I guess its very similar,apart from the wirebead being a bit harder to put on(in some cases)
