help choosing heart monitor

OK so I had borrowed a HRM and had to get it back so I want to get myself one. But seeing I am spending the money there are a couple of features that I would like.

HRM

speed

altitude

Optional niceties are PC download and route mapping.

have looked at polar cs400 but there are just waaaaay too many reviews having problems with the speed sensors. Other option is the Gamrin edge 305 - nice, but pricey!

I'd probably buy in the UK as I have a friend who heads there reguarly. One of the major concerns that I have is the warranty issues if soemthing goes wrong with a relatively pricey piece of kit.

So.. recommendations pls.

Got a garmin edge 705 and I'm a very happy camper.

The pc software is great and easy to use.

Hey bud I got a Forunner 305 I might be getting rid of. Personally I dont think theres a better option. With GPS you dont need sensors or foot pods for when you run/ swop bikes. You can wear it on your arm when taking hikes etc.. It doesnt need a bike mount( just cut a piece of foam or strap a old sweatband to your bars.etc etc.. ok Im biased.

I want to get something more water friendly (the 305 is only waterproof for 1m) I want to use it during triathlon training and when I swim in the sea (map my route in deep seaWink) but apart from that, I think its perfect.

Will Probably take 2k or so. Im back in SA on wednesday give me a PM so long if interrested.

If you're looking at a GPS, try to get one with a barometric altimeter. GPS altitude measurement is not all that accurate. In my experience, the overall profile doesn't look to bad but things like gradient and total ascent/descent come out a bit funky at times.

The Polar speed and cadence sensors can be a bit picky about where you mount them and the watch, especially if you put the speed sensor on your rear wheel (for IDT use). I had an aluminium frame and they both worked perfectly. I swapped them across to a carbon frame with different geometry and I couldn't get the speed sensor to work at all when I mounted it on the rear wheel with the watch on the bars. It worked fine on the front wheel.

The Garmin speed/cadence sensor doesn't have this problem, but you need modify it a bit to make it properly waterproof by filling a small breather hole on the bottom (easy). If you don't there's a good chance it'll stop working properly after a few wet rides and washes.

On the Garmin side you should also look out for the Edge 500 which has been released oversees and should be arriving here soon.

I've seen the 500 and would love to get one. Have found a place in the US that has them on special....just I don't know anyone going over right now :(
