Can someone please tell me why race organisers have not yet figured out an easier way of registering for races?

I am contiplating doing the Fast One.  But looking at the website and seeing that race registration is at Cycle Lab on the 21st and 22nd just puts me off from entering.  You pay R180.00 to enter the race.  But will be spending a lot more in time and money to drive from good old Pretoria there to get the race number.  I am not interrested in the goodie (aka crappy bag).

Sure there should be a way of picking up your number on the morning of the race.  Only have the registration office if you want to change your numbers.

Get someone to collect it for you and give it to you at the start - offer them your goodie bag (Which was a single, solitary newspaper last year) as a reward!

I know, but this is still irretating.  I will only enter if I get someone to assist in this.

I am enjoying the social riding aspect of MTB.  I choose the venue, the date, the time and who I "race" against!

Doing all the funrides does get a bit expensive if you do every one out there.  I will be choosing carefully based on cost, distance from home base, history of route, history of level of organisation.  I understand that organising an event can be expensive but I also feel that I should get value for money.

I would offer but last year i had a scrap with my driver - AKA wife, the day before the race and she refused to drive!  I think she did it on purpose so as to get out of driving to Vtown amongst cyclists, a task she dislikes intensely, I am sort of expecting a repeat this year and have made a contingency plan which may fall thru.

Yes appycyclist. But sure race organisers would like to attract more entries.  They should look at this.

I think I have a solution.  The problem with printing your own number is that the ink is not water proof and that could stuff up your kit should the numbers get wet while racing.

So I was giving it some thought.

Every cyclist should get a permanent number from CSA if they want to participate in any race.  This should not be expensive and has nothing to to with licences.  You should just a number printed on a weatherproof medium that could last for quite a while and costs should just cover the material and CSA has your info on a database.

Should you take out a licence the it is all linked to this permanent number.  When you enter a race you must supply this permanent number.  Instead of having to go to a registration office to register for a race, the race organisers can e-mail you a "pass" that you print out which gives yoy entry into the starting pens.  You will have your permanent race number stuck to your back.

Should you cause k@k at a race, you number is on a database and can be given to race organisers.

What do you guys think?

That seems like the better option Bat but i do feel that CL wouldn't be happy as they will loose alot of first time walk in clients due to this, which will in the end cause lost revenue.

on the other hand there a fun riders that do 1 to 3 races/funrides a year max thus paying for a permanent number doesn't seem viable

combine the two... if you want a permanent number then you can get one and if you feel that 2 races a year does not qualify a permanent number then you can go and pick one up from the cycle store ... think it is a great idea

A permanent number should not cost you more than R50.00.  If you don't want a permanent number then you can gladly drive all the way to Cyclelab and register there.  That will cost you more in one trip smiley2.gif

The only problem would be how effective CSA would make the process of getting a permanent number.  This is something that could be done on provincial level and they just forward the info to CSA.
