Ok so here is a very simple and easy and quick way to resize any picture down to less than 100kb so that it can be uploaded to TheHub

Step 1: Download this application, it can be used on Vista and Win7. I havnt tested it on Xp but let me know if it doesnt work.

Save it to your desktop

Step 2: Install it, just follow the steps

Step 3: Right click on any picture, and under the menu, select "Resize Pictures".

Step 4: ImageResizer (the program you just installed) should open, when it does, select "Small" and click "Ok".

An image with the same name and "(small)" added on should appear in the same folder as your original input picture.

Step 5: you can now upload that picture and it should be less than 100kb, if it still isnt, just repeat the process on the small picture.

Also, saving your pictures as .jpeg format will help, as they genrally have the smallest file sizes.

I share your frustration with the constant questions and mistakes.

However, the picture should be no wider than 470 pixel, otherwise we have to scroll to view them. This is particularly irritating if there is text with it and there are more than one picture per post.

Therefore, please resize them to no more than 470 wide. Don't worry about the depth, the software will (should)  sort out the aspect ration itself.

This tool works on XP; it is actually part of the MS Power toys for XP set.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx

Been using it (plus some of the others) for years (Tweak UI is great and command window here is very useful for me guys like me who still tinker on the command line often...).

This is an easy to use tool, but unfortuneatly it only offers the standard sizes as shown in the screenshot above, so cannot comply with Johan's request for 470 wide.

The width restriction is however relative to your screen resolution and size.

So 470 wide is not an absolute value which will work for all. On wider high resolution screens (e.g. newer laptops) there is no problem viewing 640 wide images uploaded to TheHub.

On my home desktop (which still has an older screen with standard aspect, running at 1024 x 768) I do run into the issue Johan describes, but I use Firefox as browser with the ZoomFox extension.

Easy to open any image in a new tab and zoom in and out.

I know what you mean, i have 1280 * 800. but anyway, my tool does have the option of a custom res, and it will keep the aspect ratio, you just click "advanced" on the bottom

BTW JR, is the version you are using a "Clone" adapted from the orignal for Vista / 7 or the original XP one?

IIRC MS says the XP power tools will only work on XP, but that might just mean it will not work on any OS before XP...

Just checked; you are correct there is a custom size under advanced. Forgot about that.

Don't see a "keep aspect ratio" option though...

Thanks, now I understand.

But, I'm going to repeat my request, just so that I can view the pictures properly.   ;-)
