Okay, Kilomaster and Stiffy I am sorry.smileys/smiley19.gif

Just, all I was wanting to question was the logic and sanity of purchasing the following for a child:

1 x orbea orca frame

1x BMC team frame

1 x set of Boras wheels

1 x power cranks (something that he still to use effectively)

1 x record groupset

when firstly, the rest of the peleton cycles raleighs and alu bikes, and secondly, (as it was evident) he was still a growing lad, meaning that the whole exercise would have to be repeated every six months for at least the next two years.

As was evident he cycled into a car (possibly on a training ride).  Not even pros use their deep section wheels every day.

My suggestions wrt possible bicycles was still broad and common sense based obviously on this persons spending potential.  However, I know of enough people with dreams, that never planned for when the dream ends.  If you want to be a pro get sponsored.  If you can't get sponsored, train on a heavy bike, do well and get sponsored.  Family are not sponsors, they are care givers.

To Pantini, yes I agree it is good to see kids with drive and ambition.  It would be even better to hear a thank you and experience less agression.  But we can't all be tree huggers.

Stiffy, I think you have experienced your first knock on this board, but be a winner and get up and go.  (or will Kilomaster be correct)

I agree, all that for a kid is just ridiculous, and all your points hit the mark. Yeah, OK, now even the doves bay for blood smileys/smiley7.gif. Ok not quite smileys/smiley5.gif. I have him on probation OK...

What if Stiffy was punished? Made an example of for displaying poor Hubber etiquette? (Pantani moves to incite the mob, the assembled lynch mob cheer wildly) Let's ban Stiffy for 2 days!!! (The board erupts into wild cheering, pitch forks raised...)    smileys/smiley9.gif

Hey Kona,

This string was never about me, but just had to comment after I saw the direction in which it was heading.

I do understand what you are trying to say and do somewhat agree there, but on the flip side of the coin...

1: If the parents can afford it, and want to buy it, why should he feel bad or have to apologize for that???

2: This is cycling and accidents happen + lady driver admitted it was her fault.

3: Very smart move having bike insurance.... Costs are covered.

As for Stiffy, cycling is a tough sport and by the virtue of its nature it can draw the more aggressive natured person... Take the needling and come back stronger! If you don't, it will just reveal a lack of charisma.

So what cars do you guys drive? Merc, BMW etc if industry followed your trail of thinking you would all be in the cheapest possible cars out their because only F1 drivers / pro drivers can drive porperly!

Hey we all aspire to having the best equipment money can buy at any age! Some of us just succeed in getting it - This youngster is one of them and just because he achieved it at such a young age (maybe he works in a bike shop I started at 14 or is a computer brain and makes money their - the assumption is his dad paid for it which also may well be true), to a degree I think all you critics are the looser and he may be a winner in years to come. What the saying Jealousy makes you Nasty!

His still got time on his side and that is one thing money cannot buy!

Stiffy

Some advise from a parent who's kid also cycles:

When my laaitie started out I asked Austin (who by the way runs the KM team) some advise. His first bit of advice was that NEVER let he become reliant on equipment! Unfortenately you have already fallen into that trap.

Let me tell you that when Willie Engelbrecht was your age you could have given him a bike made with washingpole tubes and he would win with grit and determination.

Wishing you luck in your career, but please don't rely on equpment to get you to the top)

Willie is quite correct, but if the equipment motivation tool that work then it also cannot be a bad thing. Like most investment in the world you will only no if the investment was a good or bad in year to come. I can assure both David George and Darren Lill are super motivated by lightweight wheels! Probably Jan included!

it's not about the bike. if you don't train hard your bike is worth forkall!

OH MY GOD! Praise the lord... The ever insightful Marius has spoken and blessed us all with his glorious wisdom.

I vote that the next person who quotes that overused and total lame "it's not about the bike" phrase be kicked off the hub for a month.
