I want to do the mod on my Garmin Edge 305 as prescribed on MTBGuru to sort out the "switching off problem"

On the forum the guy used Loctite 380 Black Max to seal his unit, but I am unable to find it in the shops in Pretoria.

Is Loctite 380 a type of superglue/ instant bonding glue or not? If it is, is their a similar product that someone can recomend, that is also waterproof?

I just used silicone to seal it back together. Probably wont give as strong a bond as the Loctite stuff, but I found it to be fine. At least it will be easier to open again if you need to. Try and get a silicone without Acetic Acid in it, like Den Braven Neutrsil 1001U or Silicon-NO. (Acetic Acid and electronics don't mix well, but as long as you are careful not to get the silicon on the PCB even the normal stuff will be fine)

I finally got around to fixing my Garmin!!!!

I bent the gold plated "fingers" open a bit more and installed the spacer under the USB port as per the MTB Guru site. I resealed the unit with Loctite 480 and went for my first ride today.

I could finally finish a ride without the unit switching off!!!!!

I will wait until I ride in the rain again to test if it is waterproof (I'm too scared to dunk it in a basin of water)Embarrassed

I sealed mine originally with genkem, and about 4 weeks ago, I did a ride in pouring rain. Result: dead Garmin. After 3 days in the sun, compressed air and a 1000 swear words, it worked again. This time I sealed it with normal silicone. Just as strong as glue or possibly even better. Maybe thee garmins are tuffer than they seem ( after it has been modified of course )....Wink

I wont even try dunking a new unit! They are not really built to be submerged, only to handle the odd drizzle and a couple of drops!

Well done, your unit is now in better shape than the day it come from the factory! Tongue
