i stopped making energy bottles for my morning training rides, because it was just a hastle... for about a year i have been riding on water for any ride shorter than 2 hours, and i'v never felt better!!! even flat out intense rides on empty stomach... i cant comment on the weight lose thing, my weight doesnt seem to change much...

long 3hour rides can also be hard. There is no point in riding for 3 hours at 10km/h. The key word in "LSD" rides are "Steady" (not slow like most believe it to be).

It would depend on your goals and what the rest of your training looks like, but you'd probably benefit from both:

 

One or two short, hard rides during the week when your time is limited and a long, slightly less hard (but not necessarily easy) ride on the weekend.

Rides up to 2 hours 1 bottle plain water, 2 - 3 hours 1 bottle energy drink, anything longer 1 bottle water 1 bottle energy drink. Sometimes my planned ride of 2-3 hours takes longer but then i stop at a shop and buy something.
