OEM stuff (which CRC does a lot of) does not have the BB.

My SLX cranks were wrapped in plastic' date=' and they came with the BB, spacers and manual. I thought that maybe CRC just took everything out of the box to make it smaller to ship.

Same here - the XT crank was shipped the same way. Wrapped in plastic...

now thatsinteresting ...

The XTR crank i bought from them a year ago, came in an XTR box with everything inside, just like if I bought it from the LBS.

My chum cranks arrived in plastic bags, no BB or Spacers!! It was on end of season sale though.

If the kit is shipped in plastoic bags then it OEM stuff and usually that excludes a BB and spacers unless otherwise stated.

I dont have a problem with oem stuff. Even CWC sells it like that. I bought a set of hayes brakes from CRC for R600. It came in plastic bags, but at that price I didnt give a hoot.

I know you are talking SLX here, but I must disagree with GoLefty's earlier post:

The XTR M970 crank no longer comes with the special installation tool. I have bought 4 XTR cranks from CRC in the last 3 years. The first one in early 2008 came with the tool plus BB. But since then NO TOOL; buy it separately for +/- R300!

They've also stopped sending the crankset in the OE box; now just wrapped in plastic. One of the arms was badly scuffed last time.

thanks for confirming that. Mine came with tool.

the plastic packaging means its OE stuff.

the normal aftermarket stuff comes in a Branded box.

mostly CRC sells OE Shmano stuff because somehow they got themselves registered as a OEM in the Shimano accounts system.

Shimano ain't changing that either since CRC does a massive volume for them.

I emailed them about the Deore crank...they replied in two days and confirmed that the external BB is included...

I got my XT shipped in a bag with the BB and spacers and a manual.....with some other stuff too.....all was contained in a little (seems like homemade) box....

Also, OEM is good for me at that price....!!

Sheesh!!!!!!! you guys are shysters!!!!!! Phone the damn place and find out....... even if it is "oorsee" they do have phones in Ireland and they also find it difficult to speak iengliesh!!!!!!! ...... the guys are very helpfull and will answer your questions instead of supposing and trying to impress other hubbers with your so called superior knowledge...... and of course a lot of CRC stuff is ex OEM...... how the hell else do they sell it so cheap..... and by the way...... what in heck IS wrong with OEM ........ they fit it on your new bikes anyways!!!!!!!!

I think it s shimano thats changed the policy.

two chums of mine have bought SLX cranks of CRC thanks to the superlow cost and neither had a BB in the packet.

I think this is where with CRC you don't always know what you're getting. Both of those orders' date=' the cranks arrived in plastic packets, like OEM stuff and hence the cranks were super cheap.

Its worthwhile checking with an LBS whats in the SLX box...
it could be that aftermarket kit (in a SLX box) is supplied with BB.

OEM stuff (which CRC does a lot of) does not have the BB.

Confusing I know :/

ConfusedOk what's OEM????Confused

OEM is iroginal equipment manufacturer.

its the kit that shimano sells to bicycle manufacturer as a parts kit. Manuals come with these because its Shimano policy.

In an OEM parts kit is all the bits needed to build a bike.

What CRC does is repackage the bits they buy from parts kits and resell them loose, hence you get no box. Sometimes, when the prioce on an item is close to the regualr retail price then the parts will arrive in a branded box.

This is because CRC are listed as both a manufacturer as well as a retail shop with Shimano, SRAM etc. they have a physical shop where you can walk in a buy goods but theyalso ahve a great big warehouse with tons of  parts.

the difference between the OEM kit and the regulr branded kit is;

1) OEM carries only 1 yr warranty with CRC, not Shimano.

2) OEM kit is often not full spec components, especially forks and Hubs(where cheaper bearings or freehub can be fitted)

It worth knowing this as often the question arises, "Whyis CRC so cheap".

the answer is in the above + they buy huge quanities, warehousing costs in Ireland is cheap, it s a family business, they make a smaller margin but rely on bulk to make up the difference.

Now you say why can't our LBS make a smaller margin?

well remember the price fixing thread of 2009.....??

LBS needs to make enough to cover overheads. will low volumes they can't discount and without discounting they can;t compete so they close down.

This is good and bad. Good for those who survive, bad for those who don't

CRC normally reply to email the next day or in some cases the 2nd day. Best option: phone them from a telkom line, something like 62c per minute!!!! And you get your answer right away, for only R1.80 is (a 3 minute call)Tongue.....cheaper than phoning a bud from your cellphone to his cellphone when you are a block apart!!!
