I also use my Edge 705 for dirtbiking after upgrading from the edge 305 which had a design flaw ( It kept on switching itself of due to contact loss with the battery ) and it works in every way - trust me if it works on a dirt bike it will work

on a MTB. I also discovered something amazing : You can desgin your own route using Google Maps with Satelite arial maps and then save the route on your Garmin.Go to http://www.mapmyrun.com/create_new ( After registering for the Free membership) desgin your route , save the route - then goto to myruns , re-open the route THEN save it again but this time choose Save to GPS , when done transfer the tcx file to your Garmin 705's Courses Sub-directory and you're done! Now you can goand ride it.You can also UPLOAD existing courses from your 705 and display them on Google Maps!

For those of you with a Edge 305 , You can upgrade to a 705 for as little as R1500+VAT if your 305 is still under warranty - if not add another 850+VAT.

It's worth it consedering the flaw and the added features ...

Depends who you deal with at Avnic and there appears no set policy, waterbottle paid R800 to upgrade his 305 which was just out of warranty to a 705 while i was quoated R860 to swop my 305 for another 305 and that they dont allow upgrades from 305 to 705, i refused to accept this and am waiting for them to get back to me.

OK what you do is take the replacement 305 and when it switches of again (which it will) then you can insist on an upgrade to either a 500 or a 705.

That what avnic in mount edgecombe did for me anyway.I actually took several printouts from the web to them about people complaining about the abvious design flaw.I agree that they should replace it regardless - I mean it's a design flaw!! but a brick wall is a brick wall ...

Thats what i did, i took the unit in last year for  the problem of switching off and Avnic claimed not to be aware of the problem but said a firmware upgrade will sort iot out but it still continued to switch off intimittently so i used it as an expensive indoor trainer unit but lately it been getting worse, the unit even switched off while the technician was looking at it. Avic were meant to get back to me last week but have not. As you state a brick wall is a a brick wall and all depends who you speak to there.

I've had mine for 18 months now....I'm loving it!!

I use for different things:

I love the virtual partner, though it almost sometimes kills meWink

I design routes for races on google, download and go ride it, sometimes the trails isn't visible anymore and the 705 tells me where it was

I track everything I ride and connect the dots to form new trails

on Sport Tracks I compare trails I've done and the time it took me to do it at certain times of the year.

I guess it depends if you like gadgets or not.....Wink !! The best gadget since my PowerTap!

Between the Mrs and myself, we use two 305's bought in 2007.

Mostly mountain biking (and I like the technical stuff & bombing downhill).

Not had single problem with either unit ever. Guess we are just lucky.

Would not mind upgrading to the 705, but our 305s are still going strong.

If you guys are not getting any joy out of Avnic with your problematic units, I guess my chance of an out of warrantee upgrade is zero! LOL
