If I can recall the best time on a "crap" bike for the Argus, 2:22 by Anderson .

Phew he would have dipped under 2 hours with a Trek like Lance's hehe

Funny...these threads spark huge nostalgia!

I love old retro bikes, I started riding back in 1989 at 14years old. Those were my dream bikes. I used to dream of owning an Alpina SLX with Shimano 105. (the anodized 105 7speed!)

So...last year I did the FastOne on a Pinarello Prince with 11speed Super Record and deep sections, in 2H32minutes.

Then, built up a lovely old Eddy Merckx steel frame with Ultegra 7speed and did 94.7 on it...did a 2H42min! And I still crashed coming of the highway. Yes, it was slower than my FastOne time, but given the race and the bike, I dont think the bike plays too much of a part!!

Got this off Racetec. The results from my first Argus. Check the total number of finishers!!! Geez, I think some of the lower order groups are that size alone these days smiley36.gif

That's quite an improvement from the first one

1978 - 446 finishers

1980 - 1119

1981 - 1372

1982 - 1347 (slightly less than previous year)

1983 - 1st/1829   2:41

1984 - 2nd/2023  2:48

1988 - 6th/8707   2:40

Those are results of Francois du Toit, competed in the first ever tour in 1978, won in 1983 and is still kicking ass today!

Im sure he can tell you loads about the changes in bikes & equipment he has experienced but that Pinarello Prince remains a beaut!

In those days the Argus was just picking up in popularity in Cape Town but was practically unheard of in JHB. Travelling 1400 k's to do a 3hr fun ride was considered insane. Nowadays, the number of people travelling from all over the world to do this fun ride is insane smiley29.gif

Very interesting how the Argus almost grew exponentially to the point where it has to be capped due to logistics and safety. It reflects how cycling has grown in popularity, from being a very selective sport to being one of mass appeal.
