I replace the worn GXP BB on my <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />MTB this weekend.  After replacement the new GXP BB is very stiff when rotating the crank with hands.  Installation was done in accordance with instructions (adding grease and the right torque).  Used two spacers (one on each side).  It seems that drive side bearing is very stiff.

Is this normal?

I replaced my GXP a month back, and mine rotates very smoothly. The instruction manual does warn that the seals & bearings take time to bed, but I would still not think that it should be so stiff to turn.

Although I am no mechanic, I would trouble shoot by seeing if the problem is torque related ( ie. start loosening the crank bolts - although if it is I do not know what the answer could be - maybe ditch one spacer ?)  and also seeing if a dissassemble & regrease everything in sight works.

Good luck - sorry I have no concrete suggestions..

Double check the number and placing of the spacers for your frame (which is easily measured)? sometimes they are not needed.

I made that mistake on my first fitting of an external BB. I was just about to start filing the ends ?down then after r.t.m. I removed the spacers (as required from my frame) and all was okay. ?

old GXP BB had two spacers, no problem

I already tried to remove one spacer, no luck.  Also lessened the torgue, no luck.  I greased everything from the start, also removed seals from bearings and add some waterproof marine grease,  Maybe to much grease on bearing?

Will cycle for about 3 weeks and see what happens

I have measured a 68 mm shell using tape measure (scott scale 2006 frame).  It work perfectly with two spacers with pevious GXP BB.   It seems that drive side bearing suspect (if it is possible for new BB).   Will put some km on it and then take to experts.  Will keep you updated
