Apologies if this is a stupid question. Is it possible to somehow put a new, modern, and most importantly, available stem (which all seem to be for 1 1/8 inch steerers) on an older 1 inch threaded headset with a 1 inch steerer (aka, steel frame).

And if so, how? What do I need to buy with the stem to make it work?

Use an the old threaded heaset and get an adaptor I think BBB makes them or if the 1" headset is threadless simply use a space inside the 1 1/8" stem.

Cut a strip from a red bull can or better yet, imported beer. Wonder if that would work?

Just keep things like galvanic corosion in mind.

Thanks for the tips so far.

Is the corosion you refer to an increased corosion due to the strip from the beer/redbull, or are you just referring to "normal" corosion that comes with steel stuff?

BBB does make one and some stems comes with a adaptor sleeve. IE BBB.

I use a carbon aero fork with 1" steerer with adaptor sleeve.

It's an increased corrosion. Google should be able to give a better answer, but when you electrically join two different metals, ions or something will move from the anode to the cathode(one metal to the other) under the presence of an electrolyte. Think of the lemon battery principle.

End result - The one metal or both will corode, where as otherwise neither of them would corrode on their own.

Heres the BBB one the part number is BHP 21 and is available in SA if you can't find one let me know and I'll try to get hold of one for you.

Its called an Extender (Steerer Tube Adaptor)

This is a common problem with steel bikes and alu quill stems. I'm struggling at the moment to get remove a quill stem from a steel frame, it just wont budge.

What if u use those gold grease paste stuff. DOn't know the name, but found some on the threads of my bb cups. U use it to fasten allu, so that it doesn't get stuck

Thanks for all the reply's. It seems I can with fair safety order a new stem then. Will also look out for the extender-thingy-ma-bob. As for the corrosion, perhaps it's a good idea once a month or every second month or so to just take it out and clean up things a bit. I will also try and google for some of the grease stuff that has been mentioned.

The gold grease is called Copper compound or Copper-slip as its known to people in the car industry! and that should work for the corrosion.
