I am planning to upgrade the groupset on my Silverback Monterey from a mix-n-match groupset to a full Shimano 105 10 speed. I was quoted by my LBS a price of R4600 fitted. Is that a fair price? I must add that it excludes the hubs, because I am keeping the Shimano WH-R550 wheels. The mix-n-match groupset consists of a Tiagra front and rear derrailleurs and STI's, Suntour crank and Tekra brakes.

If it is a full groupset (Hollowtech cranks+ BB cup, F+R derailleurs, brakes STi's, chain, sprocket) and includes the cost of fitting then hell yeah it's a good price for South Africa.  With the exchange rate at GBP= R14.06 it cost me just over R4K (vat inclusive) to get a full 105 groupset from CRC to my front door.

I see CWC sells the gruppo only for R4700 so R4600 sounds reasonable.

Steynja, check with your LBS what an Ultegra gruppo will cost. According to CWC their price is R5200 which is only R500 more than 105.

Steynja, the guarantee on groupsets only last about 30 days so don't bother to buy local, unles it's really cheap. I got my Ultegra (07) Excl hubs from CRC for R4700+change and that included the shipping and Vat and customs and petrol money to the corner post office.

R4170 from CRC according to their website (that includes the VAT payable in SA)' date=' shipping is free.  [/quote']

Does that include the extra 10% discount for this month?

How much of a difference is there between the 105 and Ultegra? Will it be easily noticeable?

Short version of a long answer, NO.

The difference between 105 and Ultegra and Ultegra and DA is almost unnoticable. Only if you jusmp from 105 to DA will you notice something.

Thanks for all the inputs so far. I am not even back on my bicycle after my knee operation, and I am already thinking of upgrading my bike! I cannot bend my knee sufficiently enough to get on a bike. My wife thinks I am crazy.
