A 34x23 is a harder gear than a 39x25 - the closest equivalent to a 34x23 would be a 39x26.

 

By going from a 39x25 to a 34x23 you'd be kakking more on the hills. Rather defeats the idea of going to a compact in the first place.

so what you say is you use all your gears when going uphill? rather stick to my compact then

Thought so, you've just gone and proven that you're a poser. So the guy spinning a 50 x 25 next to you is gay and you're a big tough guy with your 52 x 26. You must have quite a fragile ego if the size of your chainrings defines your manhood. Do you by any chance drive a V8 Lumina?

 

What? No reply to my maths? Have you forgone all your "facts" and reduced yourself to my level? Cool! You poofters are so easy to play.

 

But yes my stance remains - if you have a 53/39 and a 11/25 and feel the need to buy a 50/34 compact you're a sofa king....sofa king gay!!!!

FFS this thread is reminding me of Egoli, you miss a few episodes, but when you return, you realise that have actually missed nothing...everybody is still raving about some negligible matter! Make you guys a deal...those in favour of compact cranks, raise your hands. Those in favour of standard cranks, raise your hands. Now, listen carefully, those who chose compact cranks, ride them! Those who chose standard cranks...remember to listen carefully... ride them! (And those of you who want to act gay, get back in the closet, and do your queen thing there!)

Well I'm acting like a smart arse with normal digestion, instead of a man sized smart arse with verbal diarrhea.

 

My contribution seeing you asked so nicely:

Try it before you criticize it, riding a bike is a practical exercise in effort and not engineering mathematics.

I spent many years riding both a 53/39 – 11/21 or 23 and compact 50/34 -11/23 or 25, so I know what the difference is and which I prefer.

If you want to be a hero because you ride a 39/23 or 25 then carry on...you hero you.
