PBP is up next year (only every second year), and the 1st local 400Km (qualifying?) Audax is at end October...

Any hubbers thinking of doing PBP?

Any hubbers thinking of doing PBP?

It's every four years.

The Western Cape is starting off with informal group rides. Actual homologated events are in the planning stages; the intention is to have rides on the last Sunday of every month, starting at Joostenberg at this stage. The provisional calendar has a 150 km on the long weekend Sunday at the end of September, with a 200 scheduled for October.

Latrinus is driving this, but I can help with information.

Every four years - makes it worth the effort then? Looking at your tag, you did it - are you doing it again?

Any PBP-candidate hubbers in Gauteng?

The English brochure is on the site of the organising club, the Audax Club Parisien, at http://www.audax-club-parisien.com/download/PLAQUETTE-GB.pdf

I won't be going next year unless some budget magically drops into my lap.

However, I am planning to go in 2015. And to get my left knee fixed before then.

Western Cape queries: drop Carinus a line at lemmer att gmail dott com

Gauteng queries: Eddie Thomlinson at aurasan att global dott co dott za

And you know where to find me (virtually, that is).

And a 200km on 26 Sept 10.

At least that still sounds reasonable! 400Km sounds like lunacy right now!

Have you done it, are you doing it?

Lost my sanity ages ago.

I met a guy in the UK who has done PBP on a fixie several times. Now that is insanity.

And just because PBP isn't tough enough - they rode from England, to Paris, did PBP, and then rode back home.

I have the brochure here somewhere, the 400 kms is over almost 48 hours, you can start on fri at 10pm until 1am or on SAT at 3am until 10pm and then sun from 3am till 5.40am on monday or so, cant remember exactly but its in that area.

Its very do-able if you feel like spending your weekend on a bicycle, you would only need to average around 13 km per hour.

I have done the 200kms one before, its not a race so its no big deal, with lots of stops and a steady pace I think most people could physically finish, of course mentally is another issue all together.

On another note, I dont do the Audax rides here in SA anymore simply because this is not Europe, the towns are not 5km from each other and you pass through long stretches of open roads where you are very vulnerable to crime, mechanical issues, running out of water or food etc, especially as in most of these rides you do a lot of it on your own.

Theres also no back up, you pay for a map and thats it, if you have an accident, get attacked / hijacked have a serious mechanical, anything dont expect assistance from Audax.

I did one once where we found a young lady who had fallen, it was not serious, but she was shaken up didnt want to continue, Audax had no one to help, we had to get our mate to come fetch her and take her back home. It could have been far more serious.

If I want to ride without backup, assistance, medical standby etc, I'll now do it on my own, I dont need to pay for the privilige.!

I'm not big on taking all day with these things if I can help it - the last 200Km we did in 6hrs, which was more appropriate, but it seemed to have been frowned upon a bit where the recommended max speed is apparently 25Km/h or something like that.

400Km is a totally different proposition though - I don't think you can blow that away in 12 hours without a substantial meal or two thrown in, maybe taking 18 hours?

That's the cr@p part for many cyclists isn't it - crime? On a long ride to Lichtenburg (one of the 416Km weekends), in the middle of nowhere, 4 dudes jumped out of the bushes in front of us. Luckily there were four of us, so nothing really happened besides sneering, but it could have been hugely intimidating, or worse, with fewer numbers...
