Prices of bicycles

I think the average joe is prepared to spend up to R10 000-00 on a bike.

My MTB was half that price, and in each race I've done so far (NOTE: I'm not the best and fittest guy there is at the moment) I also kicked some Specialised and full susser ass. So yeah, as our moist favourite cyclist said "It's not about the bike" :D

I agree 100% with this, It will help to a certain degree, but I think it a small degree

it's all about marketing guys. All things are advertized to be better than their competitors. We weont buy something that is cheaper because it's not a known brand and re unwilling to test it in case we are wrong. Look at cycling companies..Many of them started off small, but with good marketing people bought their stuff.

Look at some of the guys on the hub, selling cheap stuff which may be just as good as branded stuff.Everyone is reluctant to buy because there is no brand name on it, so even though they say it has a warrenty,do you really believe them?? Remember that technology trickles down everywhere. So go and support your local hubbers with their cheaper imports.

:D  :P

What Technology????

With the exception of the comapct frame design, bike geomoetry has pretty much been the same for the last 50 years or so. No technology there.

So maybe the development of carbon frames but how does that justify the price of new ally frames, and steel ones when you you can stil get them.

I hear peeps talking about how deep sections make you go faster. REALLY? Does nothing for an average to below average Joe like me. No way will I even get deep section, never mind yupperware ones. (Read as carbon.) One goo pothole and that's pretty much the ball game as far as those very expensive wheels go. Really, they look sweet, and maybe they do help some go faster and that's great of they do. But what about "normal" wheels. HTF do they justify the price of those?

And cycle tyres? Freaking heck. They cost more than my car tyres and get less than 10% of the mileage I get on the car. Got to be the biggest rip of all.

In my not at all humble opinion..... We are being ripped. I was quite appalled at the price I heard peeps are paying for a groupset like SRAM and Campag. Even Shimano.

Nay, mense, ek weetie...... I thinks maybe we's stoopid. ;)

I think groupsets are a big rip-off. If you see how many get produced. There are hundreds and thousands of them and still it costs soo much.

@Slave, you mention tyres costing the same as car tyres. Have you checked MTB brake pads?

consumerism/materialism = when you always have to look for:

- more money

- better job

- bigger house

- nicer car

- Better phone

- Bigger TV

- Faster, lighter, better looking bike

- Younger, sexier spouse/partner

And one day you go to the zoo and realise that there is no difference between your cage and those the animals are kept in, except size!

I looked up the price of the Oakley C Six, and I can get them for a whopping $1,500 plus free shipping for orders over $50. With the exchange rate that's like 400% markup people!!!

On another note, unless you're a pro, I don't get why you guys are obsessing over grams on your bike. I was kicking people's asses on my Giant OCR 3, with Shimano Sora components, who were riding Felt's, Treks, Cannondales. I think you boys just need your toys!!! And for girls to say "Ooohhh... Shiny!!!"

dizzy you do realize they come in carbon and they come in an alloy, if you dont beleive me check two or three months bicycle SA mag. Its in there under their carbon section. And according to the oakley site the carbon havent even hit the market so I am not sure which chinese ripp off you were looking at.

Just as an aside to what I said earlier.

The prices are what they are because we pay them. The sponsored teams don't help to keep them down, but I think we all fall for this marketing mumbo jumbo.

Got to have the best of everything you know.... Keep up appearances, with the Jones' and all that rot.

Collectively, if we band together, and boycott some of the high priced stores, they may soon be forced to reduce their prices to stay in business.

Speaking of high priced stores, I see a new cycle shop will be opening in Melrose soon. Concept Cyclery. I will just have to satisfy myself that I can't even afford to window shop there. :( Doesn't say when they will be opening, just that it will be soon. And if soon is anything like the travel shop (Emmirates) opening up next door to us, soon could be in five of six months. :P

I paid 20k for mine, still payin it off, managed to add it too the car loan  Was the only way I could afford it. Yet I dont have my own home a 1 car - Thank god the wife gets a company car and, and is earning twice as much as she first was, when we originally came back to SA from the UK. Otherwise cycling would not be a hobby, she has made sacrifices to make me happy - Now its my turn :)

My bad... Guess I shouldn't be checking the hub at 5:30am in the mornings. However, you weren't specific in your price check. The ALUMINUM C Six is $1.5K, and the CARBON C Six is $4K.

those are the aluminum ones not the carbon ones.

The carbon ones have no been dropped to USD 4000 which with the now lower exchange rate and no import and VAT duties would come to : 28,577.9 ZAR now add duties and vat to that, and the fact that you cannot buy it online there is probably some other charges attached to the sunnies, hence why cycling SA would come to the figure of R48k

The carbon ones feel much more plush on your face.

The alu ones are so harsh they will make your teeth fall out.

Everybody knows!
