Sorry, Knobs, wasn't chuckling at you, just in general. When you say "training harder", do you mean you are doing more distance? Going anaerobic often? Pushing to Vo2 max?

Without knowing what your training includes, the best advice that was given to me by guys who have done the tough races is get the long, slow rides under the belt. Conversely, the people who have jumped into programmes have mostly ended up hating whatever sport it was cos they were so focussed on it that they forgot the fun part of why they were doing it. And then the get really irritated when they don't take off from where they were before, or they get hurt cos the new training methods haven't been built up to.

Just my experience.

Thanks for your interest Thor. Throwing in lactic tolerance training sessions now. Used to go out on 45-60min TT type rides twice a week in the past, but were advised against it. This now replaced by the lactic tolerance. Not getting quite as much base as I would like. Little bit of gym and core sessions in the mix now as well.

Need more info:

Do you spin with an HR monitor? What does it say? Higher, lower, the same as 3 weeks ago?

Obviously effort on a spinning bike is relative - no way to know how much Watts you're cranking, so you can only judge effort through an HR monitor.

Then also, having bad weeks and good weeks is part of life, so it might be diet, too hard / over-training, or maybe it's just a sh!tty and stressful week or two you're going through.

I doubt if over-training (which does not seem likely given 3 training sessions a week) is the real issue here, so maybe you're underestimating your effort or you're not eating enough carbs before training.

Doubt that supplements would be the answer though, that only comes into play when you really hit some good form!

I presume lactic tolerance is anaerobic (about pulse 160/170?)

I know from years of experience in my old, "real" sport, that you have to put in the distance first. Sounds like a stupid analogy of a pyramid, but your base fitness has to be there, before you do what you are doing. Three layers of a pyramid - base/anaerobic/and then the hardcore maxxing out the heartrate. Wider the base the higher the pyramid.

I really can't comment on all the detailed physiological responses, but you are trying to pump the muscles hard when the fibres haven;t been trained to do so. Not surprised if you end up feeling really sore and tired, cos your muscles haven't trained to convert the sugars, etc, so you get short term gain, and then when you try to do the long stuff, oh, sh*t!

Do you find you have gotten quite strong on the short power rides?

Ja, life's too short to be serious. Go get yourself a single-speed and feel like a kid again!

this Mr Turbo, earns you my vote as president. when you going to stand for elections ?

You really don't seem to be doing the kind of training that requires a lot of recovery drinks and the like afterwards and it shouldn't be supplement related. Check out the other threads on here where the guys know more about that kind of thing. Just remember that unless you constantly increase your training and/or training intensity regularly, say every two weeks, you are not going to improve radically. You improve my losing weight and increasing your power to weight ratio, etc, but your inherent fitness isn;t going to improve dramatically.

And if all you are doing is spinning - cross train. Weights work wonders, and I'm not talking the massive kg's. And get teh core stronger, too. :-) good luck!

Thanks Thor ever heard of anyone having thyroid problems as I have had blood tests as a result of hitting a brick wall. My thyroid count is low and overactive leaving me short of breath contributing to me going backwards.

Thanks Dom will try and eat right this week and probably destress.

I think my thyroid problem has got to be a factor as it leaves me out of breath.

i am fine on longer rides. I cannot cope with the short hard rides.

Ok, then clearly I have no idea

I'm the exact opposite of you. Also train with too many short lactic rides, but I rock on the short stuff and it's the long ones that I battle with.

Guess that's genetics/body type/muscle memory for you!

When it comes to medical things, I wouldn't listen to anyone on here unless they have the same problem! :)

Sorry, thyroid problems are the one thing that isn;t wrong with my brain! ;)

Did 8hrs over the weekend. For the first time used a proper supplement for recovery during and after ride. Usually would be wasted today, but I feel GREAT! Can't wait for my next ride. Thanks for your advise guys.

What did you use, bud? I'm also trying stuff and did a long ride on Sat and a short race yesterday, and I'm a bit buggered still.

How long must you rest or what must I do if I was over-training, was doing a lot of long rides(120km-160km)on weekends and a four to five shorter (40km-70km) harder rides with 3 x 10km runs during the week. In the last week I struggle to do a 50km ride without my legs taking a hiding.

If you're training for something other than fun, you shouldn't be relying on random input from Interweb wise-asses.

If you are training for fun, then hell, do whatever is fun. You are the person best placed to work out what your body can handle. Remember, quality is prolly more important than quantity.

If it ain't fun it ain't on!
