Race organizers should clean up the signs and route markers agreed.

But Riders should clean up after themselves and not litter in the first place.

Just take a long MTB route, like the 55km we did in Lourensford over the weekend, surely not one cyclist can expect the organizers to provide a crew that is going to walk the whole 55km to pick up trash  (although I did not see any trash :D )

Single track and rough terrain, some places I would not want to go hiking that is for sure!

People litter, farm owners get angry (understandability) and usage of the route get canceled.

Simple really, if you want to keep riding there or anywhere, keep it clean!

We have a 55km and 20km event in the Mokolodi Game Reserve. We have to pick up every wrapper, sachet or what ever.We also have to remove all signage,stickers/tags the next day.Or the game eats it and gets sick.

It's an illess: Emperor's Palace mtb organiser (in Feb) hasn't removed his bunting from the route either.8 months and counting. Maybe he wants to save it for next year

Hi Ikonic,

I organised the Nissan Hazeldean on 5 June and we cleaned the route directly after the race, except for a 5km section around Sammy Marx where we left some boards hoping that riders (like yourself) would ride the section again, as we were planning more events in that area and want to establish the route. The area belongs to Atterbury and will be developed in the future, but there a no fences, animals or farming activity at the moment and it is a great riding venue. Be assured that there are no litter or markings on the rest of the route or on any of the farmers property that was used in our event.

We recently decided to move our 12 hour (previously 6 hour) event to fountains after we received reports of crime in the Sammy Marx area, so we won't use the venue again this year and will make sure that the last couple of boards and bunting are removed.

Hi Fritz,

Thank you ever so much for your efforts to keep the environment tidy. If you have cleaned the route straight after the event it certainly is a great effort of commitment. I don't think people always realize the consequences of plastic on the environment, wildlife and farming activities.

In my opinion organizers should remove every piece of plastic directly after the event and for MTB riders I think we should feel ashamed for the amount of litter after an event.

I took part in the Marrick Stage race outside Kimberley which passed through a number of game farms and it was appalling to see the number of empty satches en-route and may I say mainly left by the "lead riders"

I was with Bennie this morning and he mentioned to me that they are taking a team out tomorrow to do the cleanup and remove all the taping boards etc. normal procedure after an event. What I have a problem with is riders throwing rubbish, was following a rider through a thick bushy section on Saturdays race who threw a sachet deep into the bushes - maybe thought no one would notice it there.

Cleaning up 3 days after an event is totally unacceptable. We should take greater care of our environment.
