Have just bought myself a GT Peace SS and need some help:

Where would I find the correct lock ring tool for changing the gearing/cassette gear at the rear? The local lbs had a tool but did not match and they had no success in finding something suitable;

I am unable to find very little info with regards the EBB used in the bike and would appreciate any help on how it works, maintenance requirements, tips for use etc;

Are there any knowledgeable single speeder's in the Pretoria area that could show me the ropes with regards the basic maintenance/service requirements

I use an old bottom bracket tool(used for the bb's you see on very old road bikes) to remove the rear sprocket. It works perfectly. For the eccentric bb I made myself a simple tool. A flat bar with two 3mm pins. It almost looks like a grinder spanner. I use this tool to rotate the bb to get proper chain tension. Twice a year I remove the eccentric bb, clean it, clean the bolts, lube it with phil wood grease and install. Word of caution, don't clamp the eccentric bb on the thin side because it might get damaged, rather clamp it on the thick side, you still have enough play to get the correct tension without clamping the thin side. Enjoy your GT peace. I have been enjoying my peace 9r for 2.5 years now.

I have a 2009 Peace which has an EBB and came with cable disc brakes.

To unlock the lockring on the back hub is easy, I just use a biggish screwdriver and a mallet.

I adjust the EBB by (a) loosening the bolts and then by (by) using a shimano BB tool. Works perfectly and then tighten the EBB's bolts once complete.

Hey thug, I also used the shimano BB tool when I still had the Truvativ crank on, but since I put the slx crank on the tool will only work if you take the left crank arm off. Hence the new tool I built. These bikes are great value for money. The hubs just feel like they are not good quality, considering a new custom wheelset. Cheers dude.

I used to stick a screw driver in there and push it against the crank arm untill the chain was tight.......pretty sure thats not the 'right' way but it works.....great bike, miss mine......

Thanks for all the advice guys.

The bike is second hand and definitely has the EBB. I had a ball on it when I was home now and used it far more than the dually (3:1 ratio at least). Have to learn all those technical skills though that you get away with when riding a dually.

Being more than a little challenged in the handyman skills department I will probably have to see this being done to ever understand and do it myself. Unfortunately I work out of the country and will only be back in December.

Also thought I heard the hubs "pinging" when riding (especially under torque)- does that indicate imminent failure or is it normal (has stock wheel set on)?

Are there any technically minded single speeders or knowledgeable lbs in the Pretoria/Centurion area? I don't fancy sending the bike in to a lbs where the work/maintenance is a bit of guess work on the part of the technician?

2008 models and older have eccentric bb, the op did not state whether his is new or 2nd hand.

Now that I didn't know.

I would have preferred the new model to have an EBB, looks cleaner than the slot dropouts.

I'm yet to hear of someone that owns or has owned a Peace 29 and hasn't or doesn't love it. The one I rode was great, you know when a bike just FEELS right, but the wheels and actually most of it could have done with a bit of an upgrade. Especially the seat post after I had turned it into a non returning metal boomerang.

All this talk is making me want to go ride my SS!
