ok so I have had the sram red now for 2 weeks converting from Ultegra. From the day I got the grouppo I have had problems with chainsuck and chain rubbing against front derailler. Today the chain got stuck between the frame and derailler and after some force got eventually unstuck. Took the bike back after much frustration. Mechanic reckons me I cant ride on last cog and small blade...I have always ridden this way with shimano and never had a day's problem. Is the mechanic talking bull or should he go back to mechanin school to learn some basics on how to build a bike up with new sram components?

i can get down to my 2nd last cog without rubbing against my fd. One down and it does, but can still ride there if i can stand the noise without any trouble.

Get a proper mechanic.

Just set it up yourself, google fr der setup, there's plenty of usefull articles (think the best one was on park tools website, but not quite sure) you'll be amazed at how easy it is. Mine is set up so I can ride in any gear on any cog and theres absolutely no rub.

It must be able to ride in that configuration no matter what groupset...sometimes there's noise from the F/D, I have it aswell.

BUT, not RECOMMENDED as the chain will tend to stretch quicker using that setup.

ie: last cog - small blade

biggest cog - big bladed.

Hope that makes sense to you!!

You should not ride like that. But you can adjust the FD, if you want. As DMC says the chain will stretch more quickly.

It is common knowledge that you should never ride small-small or big-big. By the time you get to the 3rd smallest gear you should have switched to the big blade already. If that is the reason for the chainsuck then it's a user error. If it happened while in the correct gears then their must be something else wrong.

Riding cross-chain will give you problems, no matter what group you are using. My Ultegra can also ride small - small and big-big, but I don't do it, as it will cause chain, and cassette damage in no time!

I reckon time for a new mechanic. My bike would not lift onto the big ring unless you were on the 14 tooth ring, lbs siad thats the way it works. Took it to another lbs and they set it up in 8 mins. What a pleasure needless to say I have a new lbs now.

You should be able to setup your FD to run like that, but you shouldn't ride it like that no matter what groupset you running. My bike sits like that when I'm not riding to prevent cable stretch. Cross chaining will decrease the life of your chain and cassette.
