On Monday morning while cycling along Van Riebeeck Rd, Kuilsriver (Western Cape) the strength of my Specialized Tarmac was tested against a C180 compressor M Benz (I like to refer to these vehicle as "'n 3-punt-ster")

When entering the intersection (the one at the Police station) the lady driver decided without warning that it was time to turn off when I was right next to her passenger door- geen flikker ligte nie. At that stage I was doing about 30 kph. I shouted, slammed onto the brakes and my right hand which was on the brake hood hit the side mirror of the car. By then I was leaning against the car and turned with the car. My feet were out of the clips and I was staying upright skidding along on the cleats of my shoes. She eventually stopped.

Damage to Specialized bike- none, only the handlebars had to be realigned.

Damage to 3 punt ster- stuffed left side mirror.

Drivers reaction- "o ek het vergeet om te kyk"

My reaction- "?????????"

Glad you're OK. It reminds me of a related incident a couple of years back. I was cycling along the Old Paarl road near Klapmuts, when a bakkie clipped my elbow with its mirror. My hand slipped off the handlebar and I just managed to stay upright. The impact broke the mirror. Needless to say, the bakkie never stopped. Ek was witgeskrik.

I still have a piece of that mirror somewhere.  15 cm's to the left and it would have been a completely different situation.

Such is life.

Not that it changed anything about the situation. Its like an after thought " o, ek het vergeet om te kyk" In the meantime het ek myself in 'n ander bloed groep in geskrik, terwyl sy net geworried is oor haar kar.

Is nogal noudat ek daaraan dink.

Believe me, when it happens to you (and I hope it never does) you'll know exactly how it feels.

Die driver aan die ander kant het "'n ver af uitdrukking op haar gesig gehad, soos die van 'n eskimo wat 'n veld brand gesien het" ha,ha,ha
