so, for those who know me and were expecting my giving ladies advice, not so...

rather, I'm looking for any practical advice regarding getting the wife keen on riding her mtb. Any recently started lady riders wanna chip in?

I know, I ride like a girl anyway, but I don't think it's relevant

It depends a lot on your wifes personality.  Is she someone who likes a challenge or will anything a bit tough put her off?  Does she mind getting dirty and sweaty?

In general, woman like pretty things!  If you can take her on a route that is scenic, it will make it a lot more enjoyable.  Of course if you live in Jhb there isn't much chance of that.  Also try find other women starting off so that she won't always feel like she is holding you up.

Got a 12 year old girl and her mom keen on mountain biking this weekend.  We took them to a beautiful place with fruit trees in flower, dams, not too many tough hills and just overall beautiful scenary.  We rode at a nice slow pacing stopping every now and again so mom could take pics.  They then went off on their own for 1 1/2 hours and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

ah. sorry, as usual I have not quite been descriptive enough. We're in Kazakhstan and people don't enjoy too many sports here, at least not when there is any physical activity. Cards and driving like lunatics is about it. Her only company is me (I hear the groans from the crowd) and we go riding when we can. There's some nice spots to go, but any inspirational stories I can point her too would be great...

Tell her that the time on the bike does not count as "personal time" and you would let her out of the kitchen more if she goes riding.

Tell her that if she rides with you it means you will be going a bit slower and will then have more energy to do all the jobs around the house she has probably been bugging you to do for months!

Da comrade. Was working my butt off, but they decided to can my app and buy another (which they pay through their ring for). Right now I'm "project manager" which means I have time to get on here and request specifications from people, etc.... aka don't do too much now. But I still need to be in for most of the day.

I try to get on the bike, but despite the MASSIVE mountains I haven't found anywhere really interesting to ride. I mean, you can ride to the ice rink (climb for about 2 hours) and come back and that tends to hurt a bit. But trailwise ala jonkershoek or something I've found nothing so far. The obvious solution would be to ask the lbs about that sort of thing, but the conversation went like this...

"Hi. Do you guys have any clubs or groups or something that go mtb'ing"...

...

....

..

..

...

confused salesman.....

...

..

..

light briefly flares....

...

..

"da, mountain bike" pointing at the range of mtb's in the corner....

"um, yeah, nice bikes. So where do you ride"

"ride?"

"your bike"

"da, bike" pointing at the same bikes.

etc.

etc.

etc..

okay, okay. I should probably learn some russian, but the dictionary does not cover bike bits and related terminology.

you'll be glad to know I have ordered Motolite 2 last night....

so now just waiting (praying) that it get's through customs all right.

Haha....good luck with the exploring!

Great that you're getting one! Hope to see some pics when you get it! I still love mine to bits!

I want to have her anodised soon. Paint is looking rather sad!

Supertorro - approach it like it's not going to be for excercise really and rather something relaxing at first.

My mom and i were home alone a few weekends back, so the one afternoon we were wondering what to do and i suggested we take a cruise with the mtb's. Nothing serious - jeans, T-shirts and takkies - none of the fancy stuff.

So to start off with we cycled through the neighbourhood - up and down all the streets. Chatted, laughed and i saw she was beginning to enjoy it. GREAT:) So i asked her if she wanted to ride a bit more in a place where there's stunning things to see.

So off we went to the golf course with its vast network of little dirt roads. Saw animals, nature, and just loved being out in the fresh air.

......and the best part...SHE WANTS TO DO IT AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK NOW:)))

she'll never get into serious mountain biking, but i think these rides are stunning. Try something similar and let me know if it worked.

PS...do not force her to go faster! Whatever pace she's comfortable with...go with that, even sometimes trailing behind her/letting her take a "hill sprint";-)

wow! sounds cool. my boys often do races or ride bike parks. but our best rides are those sunday morning danders down to the local nono's for brekkie and hot choccies. then we spend the rest of the day meandering about town visiting friends, chilling at the dam, etc?
