So you'r looking for something different? Why not make your own chainstay protector without using cable ties.

1. Take an old tube and cut in strips along the length. (width is up to you, but I found about 2-3cm is fine)

2. Clean chainstay. (See picture 1)

3. Start wrapping the tube at bb side, but wrap around itself at first. (See picture 2)

4. About 3 or 4 turns before you get to the derailleur hanger side, insert a screwdriver or flat piece of metal and wrap around the object. (See picture 3)

5. When you're at the end, insert the rest of the tube underneath the object and pull out on other side. (See picture 4 and 5)

6. Cut away the rest of the tube. (See picture 6)

That's it

Just to calm your nerves, you can wrap tape around the last turn to secure tube, but this will take away most of the awesomeness :D

Because of sh!tty camera, the tape looks more out of place than it actually is. Same with the wrapped around tube on the right.

(Maybe not my best effort yet, but that's to blame on last nights party

Just put a wrap like that on your road bike and your roadie mates won't notice your unshaven legs!

(Nice job, exactly how it should be done.)

You could also use a bit of that tube repair glue where you stick the end under the final loops. That way you don't need tape.

That's a good idea.

Biggest reason for the tape is to keep mud and water from entering under the tube

You could go really extreme and put a bead of silicone sealant around the end of the chainstay; though I think that's starting to get a bit ridiculous

Take note: using rubber tubes on carbon could result in change in carbon appearance. It looks like a misty/milky stain. Takes a few months to effect change.

My previous one was on for 7 months and carbon looks even better than other chainstay, and to me it's the same as a coloured tube. It's covered the whole time so who cares. Besides, it's a mtb
