I think that all you competing race snakes (easy does it DirtGirl, I mean everybody with their heads on), need to show us participating wannabees some respect. I, for one, live to eat and cycle to live. Race snakes, on the other hand, eat to live and live to cycle. But I'm sure that I, as a food-loving social animal, am a better cyclist than most. E.g., at today's Joostenberg funride, I burnt 2793 kCal's in 3h:09m. Now how many snakes out there consumed less than that and finished the race well before I did? Point is, by consuming 2793 kCal's, I've got stamina, guts and determination. Granted, that doesn't translate into performance - only effort. But I did it!! :thumbup:

Despite the fact that you have seen fit to exclude me, I will comment anyway...

We do this for fun.

That's the only measure that really counts.

It's not an easy thing to measure, but we all know whether we have had fun...and by the sound of things you did.

Were you one of the guys I saw in a WWF jersey?

Nope. BOE top. P group. And indeed, I had a blast!

Well then, you won.

I know that prolly looks like condescension, but really it is not.

I will never win anything that involves pedalling, but hot damn, I love it!

Respect man, glad you enjoyed your ride!

Ill give you some numbers for interest sake ;)

Consumed 1371 Calories in 2h07 during the Joostenberg race.

But a few of us cycled from Somerset West to the race and cycled back afterwords.

In total, consumed 3785 Calories in 5hrs37 and 188km

Where are you guys getting these readings? Garmin Edge etc? Be aware that its an estimate if you don't have a power meter.

Without a power meter the Garmin can only estimate the Calories used, since it lacks one vital input: the coefficient of friction. Take two extremes: You could be riding on slicks on a glass smooth tar road, or through thick sand with Muddy Mikes, both with the same speed and cadence and no change in height. Two vastly different power exertion scenarios, and how will the Garmin know the difference? All its inputs are speed, cadence, and gradient. And it will give same calories used.

At least that's what I figure.

None of these cycling computers that we use will be 100% accurate because each athletes fitness differs and not one can take all the factors above into account - especially the effort required by the athlete which will again differ from person to person.

The calorie calculator on the Edge 305 is way off - because it has a time based calculation. You can switch on the unit and let it lay around for a couple of hours and see the calories getting more.

The Edge 500 is slightly more accurate since it uses a heart rate calculation. I still only use these as an indication, not even a power meter is going to know exactly what I feel like or exactly how much effort is required with all the other factors in mind.

I uploaded my 188km ride to 3 different programs and they all have different calorie calculators:

SportyPal = 6346

Endomondo = 7676

Garmin Connect = 3758

So which one is the closest to right?

The lesser one IMO. If you hadn't had your HR strap on with the 500, you would have got closer to the higher values above.

I have a mapped course that I do regularly and if I use a HRM with the 500 the cal values are between 900-1100. I forgot the HRM on the ride onetime and the cal value was 2850 !!!!

Also what I thought, that is why I quoted the one with the least value otherwise I would still be busy eating half a cow to replace 6000 odd calories! :drool:

BTW you burn cal when you are sleeping, so the 305 is sorta right :D :D :D

You burn a lot of calories still, straight after an event but your computer doesnt take this into account. I am still burning calories from yesterdays event just sitting in front of the pc :D now where is that croissant? :lol: The 305's calculation is just way different in comparison with the 500, I think the 500 is the most accurate out of the two.

Good point there Tankman, I overlooked the HRM in my thinking. And since you also have to enter your mass (and age I think), it will use those inputs to work out work done according to some formula, but there should be an idea of the accuracy in its calculations, and I don't see any mention of that in the docs.

No - respect to you!! Half the kCal's and an hour quicker?? Well done. Any other times and kCal's out there from Joostenberg? We'll forgive you if you don't have a power meter.
