I'm wanting to buy my brother a HR monitor for Christmas. Any suggestions which is the best to buy?

Garmin Edge 500. Just got mine and I'm in love. Coming from a Polar 725 that says a lot!

I agree on the Garmin. I now use my Polar 725 only as a watch. I love the fact that you can customise the display on the Edge 500 and you can scroll through three different screens - All the info you want, how you want it.

Don't want to spend more than R2k!

He is not a serious cyclist; does a bit of running a cycling!

Garmin are nice but maybe too expense. So I'm thinking Suunto or Polar!?

If you have R2500 to spend I would definitely go for the Garmin Edge 500:) Provided u want him to be able to use it as a cycling computer too.

Garmin 305/500/705/800 are great if its for cycling but are not much use off the bike except some for navigation. If he's looking mainly for one he can wear like a watch and take to the gym, swim, run etc then polar, suunoto, sigma and the garmin forerunner range are your choices. Even Timex have a HR watch

Then out of the two, the Garmin Edge 705 or Garmin 500, which is a better option - Is the 700 all its cracked up to be? Asking cause the wife said I must choose for xmas :)

If you not directionless like me then imo the 500 is better as it has a more acurate calorie calc.

The Garmin 800 incorporates all the featuers of the 500 and 705 into one unit.

If you will ever use the mapping (a lot don't) go 705. Have you checked if the 800 is shipping on crc yet?

I want to be able to use the mapping system for sure, I want to be able to do more outriding, riding new trails. So do I also get the cadence and the HR monitor or just the HR monitor - Im not race snake, but do like to push myself

The way I understand it is the 500 is the newer gen 305, and the 800 is the newer 705. I wouldn't use map functions on the 800 so the 500 is perfect for mtb in my mind. Plus there are some really good deals on them at the mo...even locally
