Only thing I read is that you don't want to be part of it, but it is the group pressure that make you do it.

Calling it group pressure is not right. That would equate it to the guy that started smoking because his buddies did. In this case it would more be somebody that started smoking because the whole country smoked and the success of the business forced him to start smoking secondary smoke.

As an example..... I have a payment worth ZAR 15 million and payment is dragging. My work cannot go on as I cannot order materials as my operating account is low. Only option is to pay the guy ZAR 5000.00 and the money is released.

This does not happen is SA but the difference in salaries between the Civil Servant and the Public Sector WIL cause this to happen..... Mark my words.

I am not a fan of bribery at all.

But I hear you and I understand what you are trying to say.

What is sad is that the entire Africa is following suit, my wife is in the medical field, the government are as corrupt as the day Pietie stole a steak and kidney pie.

Try and get a government tender going without BEE compliancy and a cut back or an overseas trip, or a weekend getaway and so it goes on.................

The cop wanting a coke and the government official wanting an overseas trip before he/she slaps their X/signature on a piece of paper, are one and the same.

Do you ignore what they do ?

I would surmise that it gets rather difficult to do this when it's a case of putting food on the table or going hungry.

Bribery and corruption is ALL around us, and unfortunately when in Rome..........

So to all the self righteous folks on this forum here, you have bigger balls than me and hopefully you could all change the world in time to come.

You have ? And you have never had to pay a bribe ? Well done we need more heroes like yourself .

Niether am I a fan of bribery. I look at it with revulsion and disgust. It does not fall within the bounds and values of my conservative Calvinistic upbringing. I find it extremely difficult to have a sensible professional relationship with the client and others that"benefit" from it.

It is part of my job and part of the culture here and I have grown to accept it.

But be warned, and get used to it, it is happening in South Africa and it will increase.

True, there is no stopping it.

As Big H knows the two of us dont agree on much :) and even though i'll miss my daily barny with him, in this instance I have to agree in many third world countries Bribery is as much a way of daily life as taking your morning Dump and there is nothing anyone can do about it since its mostly the govermenet officials that are all involved in this.

On the flip side we still have a significant part of the goverment that does not accept bribery from lower end officials. Its only sanctioned if your one of the top brass in the ANC well in my opinion anyway. No i will never bribe an official in SA since they dont wield enough power if you know the law and your rights and you have a sharp laywer on standby, so cops, speedcops etc can all go play in the mud.

To those on the thread who seem to be holier than though, I have to assume your all business men/women, I regularly get invited to box seats at sports events, very fancy dinners, spearfishing trips on the suppliers new yaught, bottles of Johnnie Walker blue collecters edition etc. Whats that if not bribery? They are all spending money to try and sway my opinion about a function or a deal so that I neglect their competition. In its most basic form this is bribery nothing else. We can't label it bribery since no money changes hands but the net effect is still the same. Its just been labeled as socially acceptable business fpractice and most of it is even tax deductable.

Did you hear about this new "conflict of interest" law/act that the insurance/financial companies are facing? They are not allowed to "treat" brokers anymore. The companies are allowed something like R1000 a year to spend on a broker. No more weekends away, no more dinners and shows and no more gifts.

But we don't go racist... we just describing a cop, who is an @$$hole, who took a birbe, who happened to be black! It the same with criminals. For some dark and obscure reason they're most of the time BLACK. I still don't understand this racism thing.

thats the racist part. get it?

Did I bribe the CT concrete delivery scheduler to ensure my construction site kept on schedule when my concrete supply ..err.. dried up ;) - hell yes, for no other reason than financial benefit - it affected my performance bonus.

For sure that make me corrupt, no way I can blame the scheduler or things I smoked against my own will.
