Agreed, Big H! If someone told me to go running or stationary bike, I'd tell him to lump it. Boring. My Giant Elwood hybrid (definitely much heavier than 10.5kg - that's about the weight of my steel Colnago Master road bike) got me back into cycling exactly because it made me feel young again. A bike gives you the mobility that, particularly if you're overweight, you'll have forgotten you once enjoyed.

Hi Chris, will be great if you can find out and let me know. Maybe that 155kg guy is now 95 and might want to get rid of the rig. Also his input on his challenges adn successes might add some valuable insight.

Cheers

Sorry, I had the numbers wrong, he was 125 - 130kg. I just phoned and checked

Wheres the weight now Steven?

Trapper when I started I was a 141kg. Bought a rc2000 alu. The only real mod I had done have the wheels respoked with a thicker guage spoke. Oh and get him to go to a dietician that will help heaps.

Any Alu Framed MTB with a good wheelset will do. Also look for a secondhand Trek 7200FX. That is still my road bike.... stock standard as it came.

He should take up walking for a while first and lose 30kg. Walking with that kind of weight will burn a lot of calories

I agree I was 166kg's when I started and walked for 3weeks before I even thought about buying a bike. Also let him go and see some one to point him in the right direction with food groups.

And lastly be a friend and commit to helping him in everyway possible

THanks Thumper, it was in Bicycling, but it's an USA article, and he had his frames built specially. I dont know any frame-builders in RSA (personally that is :) ). I know that Silverback and Morewood are RSA designed, and there are two guys in Cape Town who is starting up a BMX bike (this month's Ride magazine).

I'll try to get hold of them eventually, just thought i'll check on the hub's experience and input first.

Litespeed titanium's or any freeride bike should be strong enough to handle those forces :)

Scott Scale. Drill holes in the frame to shave any extra weight.

lol you have a sick sense of humor since scott's have one of the lowest weight thresholds out there to support their ultra lightweight but thin frames.
