I have a XT cassette on the bike but the SRAM is cheaper. So, are they compatable/swoppable?

And which one is more durable?

ACROSS THE BOARD I think Xt has proven to be groupset of choice for quality and durability. The BENCHMARK in mtb. If I were you I would stick with xt. Yah Yah all the Sram guys will bleet and Blah but Xt really is the SHIZZZZZ.:)

Also consider the sram PG980. It is cheaper and it weighs the same as the PG990!!!! Seriously, i weighed them.

The Pg 980 is really the XT equivalent. Both the 980 and 990 are slightly heavier than the XT. durability is roughly the same.

use it, don't use it.

What are you basing that claim on - personal preference, or the feedback from your LBS?

The SRAM had more favorable reviews than Shimano - so I am interested to see what research you based that on

MTBR revies are chalk and cheese, you have no idea who the reviewer is and what experiance they have had, Also an XT or SRAM cassete may last me 6 months and some other guy 2 years, depends on riding style person's weight, type of chain's type of cranks etc. There is no way to accuratly measure the durability of either.

As far as i know Shimano and SRAM match each other on materials used for their competing cassette's so its basically a question of price rather than durability. I ride XT, but a well trusted bike tech I know that has been riding for years, still tell's me everytime rather buy an SLX cassette. Better value for money.

Yeah - reviews are very biased and subjective, hence me being interested to hear where the BENCHMARK and "proven to be groupset of choice for quality and durability" research was based on.

I often hear people recommending SLX over XT due to very similar weight and quality but a lot cheaper.

Only input I heard from a bike shop in terms of recommendations, was to try and use the same chain as cassette, be it Shimano or SRAM

13500km on one 990 cassette with three chains swapped around every 500km. Once all three chains reached 0.75 I replaced the whole set. SRAM all the way.
