They have been advertising as a four star mountain biking destination in the Tread lately and me and the wife wanted to go away for some mountain biking on the weekend. So we booked. To cut a long story short we were only able to ride the short bike park trails (an area about 2km by 2km)because the other rides were unmarked and needed to be accompanied by a staff member - who kept dodging this with stupid excuses. Finally we checked out early so we could at least ride at van Galens on Sunday. Bottom line. Wasted 7 hours of driving and R1800 on a bike park ride.

Edit: I have been contacted by them and offered a second chance to experience the resort at their cost. I will update once this has occured.

Second edit: They contacted me and gave me a second chance to re-evaluate their service and riding. I found it to be excellant. The riding was some of the best single track I have ever ridden - especially the downhills - service was top notch, food was top notch, company was top notch from other mtn bikers on the so called training weekend. Conclusion: My bad experience was a once off and they are serious about giving guests a good time - go ahead and enjoy.

Just send pm to admin, I'm sure he'll move it for you. If I was you I'd write them a letter and ask for my money back. Write to tread as well.

I was there between Xmas and new year. My experience was totally diffrent to just keep pedaling....

I really enjoyed it. Sure the tracks is short (7km), but one can do more than one... Some parts of the trail is really technical and some is easy....

We even did a night ride, which was awsome, riding between the animals, seeing their eyes glow....... :D

I think it is grat place and will definitly be back

Rating:

9/10 for Accomodation

7/10 for trails

10/10 for effort

I agree with Just Keep Pedaling to a degree. I was there around mid December till just before Christmas, the difference is I didn't just go for the riding and had a really good time with the family.

The resort itself is very nice and there is a lot to do with the kids so overall we were happy, if however I went just for the riding I would have been very unhappy. The trails in the resort were nice, but short +-7/8km.

I did a longish ride off the property with Garth, the resort manager, +-40km or so which was excellent, however I'm not sure if I would have found my way by myself.

In Tread they also do not mention that many of the trails are under construction so the advertising is misleading, I was quite annoyed that the advertised kids trail was "still under construction" i.e. non-existent. To me if you are looking for a pure riding holiday go to Mankele, it is brilliant, if you want something with some riding but also a lot of stuff for the family to do then Misty Valley wins hands down.

PS I found all the staff apart from the receptionist to be very friendly and knowledgable.

I actually went to both, 2 days at Misty Valley lodge, 2days at Mankele.

Misty Valley lodge is more family orientated and Mankele more biker orientated.

Still enjoyed both places and will go back to both.....

Surely one can do 30kms without repeating the same STrack?

Was also a bit Peedoff when I saw the under construction labels.....
