KMC chain from a stumjumper broken on 1st ride -watsup?

Howsit guys,

I recently got a new specialized stumpjumper comp and the chain broke on the very first ride - put a real damper on the rest of the riding for the holidays. The chain is standard with the bike - KMC X10, 10-speed, w/ reuseable Missing Link, nickel plates. When I went to the nearest bike shop in harrismith they told me KMC is a bad chain to start with and replaced it with a 105. Is the chain useless or was there some fault with the setup or am I just unlucky?

Thanks!

KMC a bad chain

Let me guess the bike shop did not have KMC in stock?

No new chain should break on the first ride, if it does it's most likely because the chain was not properly joined or rider error.

I'm laughing with you Swissvan. KMC makes everybody else's chains and then just stamp the appropriate logo on. If it broke at the quicklink then yes it was not assembled correctly. If on another place then it was proberbly just a dud or bad shifting.

Yip, I saw a brand new XTR chain pop because of a shift under load.

For what it is worth, I find Shimano XT to be great price point wise for consumables. Good luck

You don't say how you broke the chain or what the chain looked like after it was broken. You have not given us enough info to help you.

In the absence of that info, we're just gonna guess that it was a bad shift.
