I'v always been a campi guy but i must admit, the electronic shimano is quite nice.

1 thing I will say is Campi are definately not playing catchup, if you look back they were the first to come out with an electronic groupset but did not persue it for long and stopped production, there were too many variables and they believed improving the tried, tested and trusted system was the better way to go.

Can still service all ur campi stuff inhouse, shimano goes funky and you have to call an electrician and a computer programer lol :P

my 2c

I have to agree about the service aspect. Shimano shifters are impossible to work on, but then again, they are so cheap, you just replace them! Plus, unless you fall they are pretty much indestructible.

Anyway, just for the record (if you read a previous posting), you will notice Mavic was the first to produce an electronic groupo, not Campag. It's all a bit pointless looking at who was first really (remember Betamax was there before VHS?). What matters is who was first with a commercially succesful product!

Let's hope the new Campag electro grouppo is up to their road group standard. They might not survive another mtb group type disaster. Personally I hope they make a success of it because they are the one company forcing the Shimano's and Sram's of this world to make products which don't just work well, but look good too!

I do agree with u there, they get the points for bringing out the first commercially available (fully functional) units. They seriously missed the boat with the MTB revolution so hopefully they can add a few extra things to their electro group to make it stand out even more than their sexy styling.

But if not I will still stay old school cables for as long as I can, I love the way campy makes my bike feel and look.

All credit to Campy, for being a force in the road market. They are at a huge income disadvantage to SRAM & Shimano for not having MTB components - probably why their electric gruppo is taking so long to get to the market. They also don't have a big piece of the OEM gruppo sales.

The story of the electric gruppo looks like a sad one for Campy - it looks as if they started with the idea, and/or had a working prototype before Shimano. Shimano started after them, overtook them and had the gruppo on the market years ahead of Campy. If they are not careful, Shimano will have electric Ultegra (Ui2?) on the shelves before the launch of electric Record. Campy was ahead with carbon components, cranks etc. I wonder what went wrong with their electric gruppo?

Good post christie - I would not worry too much what the detractor(s) say above, you need to at least get on a bike from time to time, never mind ride at a certain level of proficiency, to appreciate Campy or Sram Red.

What worries me is that Tulio Jnr brought up the Mavic ghost in his interview..... he still remembers the MTB ghost of years past...... I hope they send Gepetto on a refresher course

I'm a huge Campy fan, with the only Shimano in my possession being an old 8 speed Dura Ace groupset which is cool in a retro way. It does appear though that Campagnolo may be in a bit of a bad way. I read somewhere that Shimano outsells Campagnolo in Italy of all places, so one can assume that the reason Campy is struggling to compete is largely financial. When I say compete, I don't mean in terms of quality, but in terms of sales.

This also translates into sponsorship. This year there are only four Pro teams running Campy, six running Shimano and eight on Sram. Even Italian Liquigas, a long time Campag user has defected to Sram.

While they haven't turned to the East for manufacturing, much of Campagnolo products are made in Romania, so they're not exactly "Made in Italy" any more. Sad but true.

Being a Basso and Liquigas team fan, this was a huge surprize.

The more moola, the more marketing, the more access to pro teams.

It all makes sense, velo...

one day campy stuff will be worth a fortune...... cause reading some of this makes me think they going slowly out of business?

Now thats a quantum leap in thinking!!!

All 3 have their strengths, I have spent some time on the upper end road stuff from all of them.

Campy - great looks, best mechanical shifting imo. TT shifters are really cr@p, by far the worst and also most expensive of the 3. Also, no indexed 11 speed shifters were available for a loooong time after the 11 speed gruppo launched.

Shimano - Last in the looks department imo. Somehow, their components have an industrial aura about them. Can't be called works of art. DA brakes are the best on the market. Di2 have to be experienced to be believed, its shift quality simply blows everything else out of the water. TT shifters are ugly, but cost effective & work well. Shape ergonomics of the new road STIs are poor, imo.

SRAM - Best cassette concept. Best bang for the buck too - love the Force gruppo. Best shifter ergonomics, imo, as far as shape goes. Best mechanical TT shifters in R2C, by a long margin.

I have not ridden / know anyting of a German gruppo ;)
