I love choccies.

Just adore ice cream.

Add a few to ma Pronutro.

And gotta do 2 0 2.5 sugars in a mug of tea or coffee...

As a passionate cyclist, how limiting, if at all,is sugar for the ol' racing form?

Sugar is not limiting when it comes down to racing performance. Apart from fat it is the next best thing when it comes to an energy source. Too much of it though and you will become diabetic which is a certain problem. I would cut down in your tea and coffee (1/2) and maybe in your pro-nutro. A bit of ice-cream and chocolate every now and then is not a bad thing just not everyday. The fat burning effects of caffeine is reduced when you have any form of glucose with your beverage (rusks, sugar, choc, etc). Too much sugar will become converted and stored into fat

I am concerned about the long-term risks too, aungiers, other than performance breaking effects.

Seriously gonn monitor my sugar intake from now on.

Thanx for your note, man.

Had a nasty scare with my bloodsugar after New Year. Tested and it was at 17,8 mmol/L. We have made drastic changes to the diet and it is now down to 7,7 mmol/L. Not correct yet but much better.

Xylitol works for me. Less sugar means less body fat and fewer cravings to eat yet more sugar. Then when you do consume glucose (in a race for example) your body is more responsive to it.

Yup used xylitol for the first time over the holidays, is passable as a sugar substitute unlike these sweetners you get. Ordered 2kg which should arrive today. With the copious amounts of sugar i take each day it might actually have a big effect on me.

Do you use it like sugar and can it be used in cooking? Does it have the " fake" sugar aftertaste?

Big H is a 100% natural derivitve from fruits and vegetables, and yes you can use it for cooking, it basically looks like sugar (crystalized) though you do get it in powder form, and it tastes 95% like normal cane sugar, I would give the best alterantive sweetner i tried a rating of 70%. And none of the harmfull chemicals found in sweetners either.

Actually sugar affects your performance. Too much sugar enflames the muscles and reduces overall performance. Not saying sugar is completely bad for you, but need to keep in mind not to eat too much of it.

My coach is a huge anti-sugar fanatic, and we constantly butt heads because I like my fruits. His recommended daily allowance is:

Sugar in Grams

100-125lb = <50g

125-150lb = <70g

150-175lb = <90g

175-200lb = <110g

Here's his anti sugar soap box along with some other info that people had posted: sugar

Forgot to add that I was actually part of a "study" middle of last year were we cut out sugar almost completely for a month and did a exercise metabolic rate assessment (VO2Max, HR, etc), at the beginning and end, and everyone that participated saw huge gains in performance.

Where are you getting your 2kg's from Covie? I'm buying 500 gram bags at Pick n' Pay and it's quite pricy - about 70 bucks.
