A friend of mine, posted on Facebook, that she saw two guys trying to hit and push a cyclist off his/her bicycle this afternoon on the new cycle lane on Otto du Plessis...she was stuck in traffic. I've asked her for more info but she hasn't replied yet.

Anyone perhaps hear anything about an incident?

OK got a reply from her...happened on the bridge opposite The Paddocks heading towards Sunset Beach

Sounds like the cyclist managed to get away but was nearly pushed into traffic on the bridge.

I hope he/she is OK. Really sad to see/hear of things like this!! :(

I hope the friend called the cops?

I find it shocking that people in traffic will generally just sit there and watch it happen and not do a thing.

The witness was a lady... I wouldnt recommend that a lady gets out of her car in the middle of traffic to confront TWO (bigger/stronger perhaps) criminals.

A much better option would be to...

.. run the criminals over with her car ;)

Ah GREAT... New cycle path is awesome as you don't have to contend with cars taking you out now you have to be concerned about being hijacked. Will it ever stop!

your are right, this is so common. i remember in KZN, when one of my friends was hijacked when she had stopped at a red traffic light. car behind and in front, no-one helped!! really sad. they just drove around the vehicle.

What a stupid comment. What are they supposed to do? Get out and tell the armed hijacker to leave her alone....and get shot in the process?

The point is people do not want to get involved....never mind getting out the car...how about calling the police...following them in your car...

The bottomline is that in SA people look the other way and have some feeble excuse why they could not help...

NOT a STUPID comment! Get a spine and do something, use your car as a weapon and run hijacker over!! I promise you the hijacker will not be able to shoot you if he is under your car wheels or flying through the air!!

I'm ALL FOR doing something, but it's not as simple as you make it sound. Most hijackers work in pairs so you'd have to run down two of them. Chances are you'll be shot before you're done squashing number 1.

In a large part of hijacking cases they simply want the car. This is why it's best to just walk away and let them take it.

It sure as hell is not worth losing your life over. But, be my guest and go be a hero.

I ride through a pretty dodgy part of Cape Town i.e lower main road and I constantly think about this, not sure what I will do in this scenario, do any of you ride with some sort of protection/weapon?

Probably best to just give the bike off, but I guess you can way up the scenario.

Yesterday with the Gale winds there were a couple of times when you going so slow you an easy target.

maybe sounds stupid to you now, but i wonder what would your response be if it was your wife or daughter or someone close that was getting hijacked????

the point being made here, is that most south africans are able to turn a blind eye to things like this, when we should be making a stand.

run the hijacker over, call someone, take a stand against this!!!!

From which culture were the hi/bikejackers?

Can a secondary assault/murder as an attempt to assist be accepted by the law?

From which culture was the female cyclist?

Have you seen the lanes in the Pardon Eiland section? (Now thats isolated in the early morning)

Why do f**knuts insist on continuing a culture of take, through any means, that which does not lawfully belong to them?

Can I stab a bike-jacker in the throat and watch as he drowns on his own blood?

Or will that make me no better than him?
