ok so I’m no professor when it comes to cycling.. and normally I cycle Mtb..

today I went on the road.. and I noticed something.. just about everybody in our group was permanently in the large chain ring... going up, down or flat.

so I chirp up.. so I see you doing power training today..." no I’m just trying to ride the bl### bike..." was the response.

I told him to drop to the small chain ring.. he did.. and not long after that back up.

I’ve always been taught that you must sit and spin. and not try to push big gears... as this has a twofold purpose.

1. by spinning lighter gears you conserving energy for later, i.e. not tiring your muscles out by powerlifting. and 2. in races you don’t end up running out of gears when the pace picks up..

so what’s up with all this big gear riding.... or is it you just don’t know how to ride your uber expensive bikes.......

small gears hi cadence get your heart up and if you are unfit they dont want it ,its not only legs that last longer but your chain and cluster wil not work that hard

my 2c ;)

some guys like to spin, some don't.. if you are used to the big ring spinning takes some getting used to..

maybe just chill and ride your bike the way that makes you happy? less worrying about the expensive bike guy = more enjoyment for you.

I ride upper chainset in a vain attempt to stay with my cycling partners who are vastly stronger and faster than me...

that's exactly why i switched to the lower gears way back when i still rode with roadies. now i ride with MTB peoples and they dont mind waiting for me - and i'm still in the smaller gears :D

I was taught 'train the big gears, race the right gear', the right gear being the 'spinning' one.

Anyway works for me
