MTB - Climbing in JHB

Hi Hubbers

 

I rode Attakwas last weekend and again realised that the hills on which I train are totally inadequate. Where are the best spots for hill training in and around Jozi? Looking for distance, gradient and technical difficulty. Or should I just accept there are no mountains in Jhb.

Groenies is great, some technical challenges as well. Bit of a drive from Jhb but well worth it.

Last time I said there were no 'mountains' round Jo'burg I nearly got tarred and feathered - don't dispute that there are some pretty killer climbs around but mountains?

For pure training ride I would look just outside jozi...suikerbosrand(on tar) and breedts(district gravel road). Not technical but you will be climbing alot

Teaks climbs are too small. For good hills, I would take a drive to hekpoort (breedts as mentioned above). It is a bit far out, but you do that hill two or three times and you will know about it.

A mix might be good, cycle the suikerbosrand route for climbs, then stop off at Rietvlei for some technical riding.

No but we did on Sunday but it was not planned our route we were exploring ended with the only option of portaging down into the garden's had a quick spin round and made a quick exit
