There was a lot of grumbling on the hub when the city started building the new cycle lane which extends roughly from Tableview to the city, but I have found it a great addition to our city and enjoy the fact that there is at least a small stretch on my training rides where I don't have to worry about being knocked by a car and I utilise the lanes frequently.

In the last week, however, I have twice had a puncture from a "duweltjie" on the stretch between Sunset Beach and Dolphin Beach, as there are a large number of these thorn baring plants on the sides of the cycle lane. With the city's "official opening" happening on the 1st Feb, does anybody know who I can talk to get a few guys out there to clear the weeds?

Had the EXACT same problem over the weekend, infuriating :cursing:

Then you have to ride more int he middles witha VERY narrow bicycle lane and theaten to take out the oncoming cyclists.

Speaking of which, to those taht ride in the lane (more than 1 cyclist at a time), PLEASE do us all a favour and Look ahead when riding 2 abreast, instead of taking over both lanes and NOT seeing oncoming riders.... My throat is sore from asking a LOT of you to "Use your lane" at the last minute

Been commuting from Table View to Town for a couple of years now and the thorns have been there from the beginning.

They tend to be a seasonal issue though.

These thorns are the reason I stopped using a roadie bike to commute and got the MTB converted to tubeless as there were days when I would be fixing 5 flats one way.

It would be great to see them trying to curb the thorns there, but would that mean using poison to do so and would this be an option considering the ecosystem that the path cuts through.

Try getting this little BBB bell. It attached to the underside of your stem with some o-rings (which hides it from view), but gives off a nice load ping when you approach. Should scare them enough to get into line. Works like a charm. Well, like a bell actually...

And how much weight am I gonna be loading onto my "skinny" bike?? Nah, my high pitched screams do the job, but crickey, its just about keeping your head up and looking forward when riding two abreast, its not that difficult to do?

I would probably shove the bell down someones throat :o

We have used a couple of bells in the past but have found them to have a rather short life span with the springs loosing tension rather quickly and with my last one flying off my handlebars when chiming the bell ohmy.gif

We have resorted to a loudish "Hup Hup" sound / shout the has proven to be rather reliable. clap.gif

At one stage whistling at the offender was investigated, but in winter when things are really cold it has been found you can't get your lips to form correctly to whistle unsure.gif

I am enforcing / strengthening these views with little emoticons biggrin.gif

Go Tubeless and try to hit (i.e pick up) as manny thorns as possible!

You'll be of great service to the rest of the crowd that have not yet discovered tubless tyres...

Buy a whistle (like referees at Rugby/Soccer matches use) at a sports shop. Lekka loud blast on it gets their attention double time. Works a charm. Used it one year on the Argus, had a blast (pun intented) up Smitswinkel. :D

Please dont ask them to cut the thorns. They use brush cutters that throw the rubbish all over the lanes and we get more thorns. I must have 10 tubes at home with loads of patches on. i even tried double tires but still got thorns on my road bike.

I just take my chance now and hope for the best.

I did see a guy with a blower a few weeks ago blowing stuff off the path :D

Sorry for the slight derail....

I was under impression that you cannot patch road tubes  Please tell me my impression is wrong

Sheesh, what has become of the world!? What did you do as a kid, did daddy just buy you new tubes every time you punctured? I hope at least that you don't throw your one-hole-punctured perfectly usable tubes away but give them to BEN or something.

Ag man...vlieg hel toe!!!

Nah, I used to patch my tubes, but when I started cycling again my mates did mention that road tubes do not get patched. In hindsight, they might have been referring to the act of standing by the roadside in a race waiting for the glue to dry. I was always very sceptical, but did not want to run the risk of getting an old puncture 30 k's from home.

That added, I got my second flat in three years (when I started again) yesterday, so I have a lot of dumb luck, I am too blind to avoid glass and such. Yesterday I hit a stone and scored a snakebite
