Hi guys

We will be vistiting SA for just over 2 weeks from 8th Feb and would like to get some riding in. I will prob bring over an old steel 531 framed bike that I use as a winter training bike here in the UK. We will be in Lagenbaan for the first week (as I am also a keen kitesurfer) and then in the capetown region for about a week and a half. I was hoping for some advice on road cycling in or around capetown (or lagenbaan for that matter) for eg are there any obvious do'd and dont's (I was hoping to get some road miles in early morning before the wind kicks in) Any suggestions for routes, group rides, club rides maybe?

Appreciate that this is a bit vague but any suggestions very welcome (Happy to recipricate btw if any roadies visiting Brighton!)

Many thanks

The road in and out of langbaan is very dangerous to ride on. When you are there and go out early make sure that you have front and rear lights to be seen. Ask the locals to show you the road out of langebaan towards mykonos. That road is better for cycling on.

I will be in Fishhoek from the 17th to the 27th. Most propably from the 19th I will be more flexible with my time from the 19th. Let me know if you want to join for one or two rides. My rides however would propably be more in the afternoons after 16:00 or on weekends I will be out in the mornings.

Lets see close to the time.

Anyone have any thoughts on areas to avoid cycling through in or around Capetown, any areas or roads that are particularly good (chapmans peak for eg). Also ok to cycle solo? Any thoughts ?

Many thanks

If you're staying in Kalk Bay then it is all good cycling from there! The loop out around Chapmans Peak is awesome - the only bad part is you will have to do Constantia Nek to make it a complete loop which isn't nice at all (far too narrow and no edge to ride on). Rather go to the top of Suikerbossie, turn around and head back the way you came or carry on through camps bay and sea point if you are fit enough, but will still have to turn and head back the way you came (but all very scenic along the coast).

This time of the year there will be hundreds of cyclists out on the roads preparing for the Argus Cycle Tour in Cape Town. You need only say hello and tag along with a group of similar ability and they will assist you whenever you get out there. Early mornings are always busy. As mentioned will be far better to head into the reserve when you're up in Langebaan. Hope you have an awesome visit down here. Kiting in Langebaan is very cool. Kite beach in Tableview in Cape Town is where all the Euros and top chaps hang out in summer. It's in front of the Dolphin Beach Hotel btw. Good days will see over 70 kites up and enjoying the waves. New cycle lane from there in to the city that was officially opened yesterday.

the nature reserve in langebaan.very little traffic with a 40km/h restriction if I am not mistaken.(that is for cars)quite a nice workout if you do loops in the reserve and have a beer / coffee at Geelbek in the reserve.

Just a question.........every cyclist in the UK seems to have a winter training bike. What on earth is a winter bike? How does it differ to any other bike? Surely a "summer" bike will also work just as well in the winter.
