Hi all.

Hope somebody can help.

I can feel a solid case of shin splints stalking me in my left shin.

Any body out there with advise on what to do to prevent this from becoming worse or to cure completely.

PLEASE HELP!

Advice containing sentences like “lay off for a week or two” are not permitted.....I am training for IM and I don’t have enough time to lay off for a week.

The only thing is to stop running. Sorry, I ignored mine and developed stress fractures - you need the rest to prevent further damage. If you want I can send you the x-rays from my cracked shins from when I took time off cycling to compete in running.

myprodol! thats the only thing that worked for me!! just as a point of interest, you sure its shin splints and not a stress fracture? its from running no?

Not that sore yet, so I don’t think it’s a stress fracture. Jip, it’s from running.

lol thats the best discription ive heard before!

from my experience with Shin splints, the pain sets in quickly but doesnt get worse it levels out and stays at the same intensity, stress fractures get progressively worse (Havent experienced the stress fractures yet) but thats what i have heard, so i would suggest going to see a doctor if the pain gets worse! what you think TNT?

Rest, reduced intensity when resuming training. If you find yourself taking myprodol and cataflam/indocid just to complete a training session, you've gone to far.

If the pain increases after rest/reduced intensity, go get an x-ray.

Dude go find yourself a proper physio and let them give your shins a good rubbing. Generally all these ailments are from an imbalance of sorts somewhere along the lines.

Also you have been training for IM so Im assuming you not coming from a sedentary background where you sat on your @ss all day long until last week? Thats generally how they appear for the vast majority of peeps.

you mean one can actually compete/train without medication

seriously though, the last thing a athlete wants to hear is the word "rest" but sometimes thats all that works! well...... that or Cataflam

When I broke my knee they gave me cataflam and synape forte together. That is a good mix :D

Jongozi,

I'm in the same boat you are at the moment got shin splints and training for IM.

My suggestion to you is as follows:

1. Re- think your strategy for Iron Man. Do you want to go for a good time or do you just want to complete the event in the allotted time? You may have to spend more time walking the marathon that running so improve your other disciplines to give you more time for the run.

2. Take a break from running i.e. REST (if you get a stress fracture you won't be doing Iron Man at all)

3. You can still use swimming and cycling to work on your cardio fitness while taking a break from running.

4. Go see a good physio for some topical relief from the pain as well as to assess the cause of the injury (imbalance etc), and get program to get you back up and running.

5. REMEMBER when you start back to running build up slowly i.e. literally walk before you run!!!

A useful link I found when researching treatments:

Hope you get sorted, and good luck with the training.
