RACIST BIKE LANES

I used to catch train to work everyday, but I had enough because they are always late and unreliable and also it is so dirty. The Metrorail should not move the train unless all the doors are close, what is the point of having guards at the stations???? In Tawain, the train comes every 5mins and in Europe I tried to keep the door open like in SA, they want to arrest me.... What is wrong with SA??? Lazy bastards!!!

That's what I said earlier. The trains being out of order is recent. The plans for the cycle lanes have been around for some time. It's point-scoring.

Amazing how politicians twist things in turn for votes, nevermind the real reason the trains are out of service, the voters are as stupid as the people they are voting for.

Me thinks that "larney" and "wealthy" and "milnerton" are mutually exclusive concepts.

Good one! (But Tony doesn't care, he's got political scores to settle.)

Not so much stupid as uneducated. There has been an increasing lack of support for the ruling party, and the alliance, over the last couple of years because of growing dissatisfaction with service delivery.

Well lets turn the coin back on them now.

It is unfair and "racist" to me because there is no railway lines going into table view and surrounds.

When I used to work in town I used to wish for a train service every single day trying to get there.

Here is the COSATU press release:

COSATU PRESS STATEMENT ON BICYCLE TRAIL LAUNCHED IN MILNERTON

1ST FEBRUARY 2011

Bicycle lanes a great gimmick for the wealthy whilst poor have to hang

outside of trains

COSATU is outraged that the DA in the Western Cape and the City of Cape Town

prioritises bicycle lanes for white wealthy citizens, whilst poorer

communities on the Cape Flats are subjected to overcrowded and unsafe public

transport every day of their lives. Metro Rail has taken 10 trains out of

service due to the lack of timeous maintenance, which has led to overcrowded

and unsafe trains. On a daily basis people can be seen hanging out of trains

in there desperate efforts to get to work on time. Instead of the DA hiring

busses to run in parallel to these train lines, to minimise the

overcrowding, they instead spend millions of the meagre transport resources

to give the DA white constituency in Milnerton a special bicycle lane. These

larneys of Milnerton all have cars anyway, so they should not be the most

urgent consideration of public funds.

This latest move by the DA just shows again their lack of regard for the

challenges facing poor, mainly black and Coloured communities on the Cape

Flats. The improvement and maintenance of white privilege is the DA hall

mark. We demand that the money spent on this gimmick bicycle lane for the

larneys , be redirected to the hiring of busses to assist working families

to get to their work places safely, during this crisis in the Metro Rail

system. The Premier and the Mayor have until 14 February to respond to this

desperate demands, failing which we will have option but to lay charges

against their offices.

This gimmick may have an appeal to the wealthy DA voters of Milnerton, but

it is done, by endangering the lives of poor working families, from the Cape

Flats.

i like the way they use the word 'larney' and expect to get taken seriously.

i also like the way they complain about a 3 year project on the day it's launched, and want the money back somehow

I also like the way they include tony's number. i will send him a 'please call me'. surely a man in his position would reply to those of us who have a lot to say, but can't afford to pay for phonecalls?

ps. anyone know how you send a 'please call me' on vodacom network?

So true, although I shouldn't generalise. It is more being uneducated then being stupid, maybe its a bit of both.

It is more like a propoganda tool (perhaps a sensationalist tool) Elections are coming up and how do you get support? By stirring the masses. Who supports COSATU? The commuters on the trains! He wanted a rise and he got it. Name in the papers and on the lips of a lot of people. Mission accomplished.

Maybe we should invite him out on a ride with us sometime? Take him through the Marine Drive / N1 intersection just for fun?

Its a political press statement, made by a political party, to achieve a political end. Try not to get too caught up in it. The bike lanes are not going to be taken away.

You would think there is a local election coming up soon...

"Metro Rail has taken 10 trains out of

and unsafe trains. On a daily basis people can be seen hanging out of trains

in there desperate efforts to get to work on time."

Seems Metro rail should be fitting the bill if extra busses are required.

Perhaps if the commuters stopped burning and vandalising the trains, there would be more in service?

@ Loudmac. I am not so sure that no more will be built.

And the way I view things is like this - the NP was in power. Then they were not in power. Now the ANC is in power. One day they will not be in power.

Today I might be struck by lightning. But today I might not be struck by lightning.

The term "struck by lightning" is a collection of words put together for the purpose of projecting a horrendous experience. But it is an experience which may, or may not, be experienced.

The collection of the words "Bike Lanes are Racist" is put together for the purpose of projecting a historically horrendous experience.

The lanes are built. The haters will hate and the non haters will not hate.

In the meantime ride and be alive.
